New ownership and developments at MRE

After a few months of uncertainty, I see over on MRE that Phil Parker has announced a new owner of MRE (Model Railway Express) the online magazine started many years ago by Pat Hammond. A new company has been formed with Simon Kohler as Chairman, Phil continues as Editor, and other enthusiasts are involved in the running of the company.

I wish them success with this new venture.

Must admit I gave up on MREMag when Pat Hammond passed it on. However, with SK now there, it could prove interesting, so I've bookmarked it

I pretty much gave up on it when I discovered RMWeb.

A little disappointing to see two negative posts already following what many others will take as good news. I think Phil Parker has done an excellent job in difficult circumstances through two changes of ownership and the format now is different to the original. Pat is still very involved and most days he provides a model or magazine review - he is also a director of the new company.

However much we love RMweb, we have to accept that there are other media sites out there that have their own loyal following. It will never be the same as RMweb as it's only published 3 times a week but Phil is always up to date with the news and at times I'm sure I have read about things there before they appeared on RMweb. For some it's just a different way to write about their hobby - a bit like writing to the monthly magazines.

The world would be a very dull place with only one source of info (even if RMWeb speaks with a thousand contradictory voices!).

I value both RMWeb AND MRE equally (other forums are available...), and wish MRE all the best for the future!

I don't argue with the fact that MREMag is good, in fact it seems to have done very well under Phil's stewardship.   It's just that for me RMweb offers a bit more, simple as that - hence I only occasionally look at MREMag nowadays.

I'm another one who only reads it occasionally. I do have a quick scan through (mainly the letters) to see if there is anything interesting though. Sometimes many weeks after.

Is there any chance that they will complete the addition of the Loco Database? That was something that I found very useful and interesting, and has only partially been added to the "new" site. It was handy for finding out which manufacturer had made what. It makes searching for obscure models much easier.

I think that Phil has done a great job with MREmag and as editor made noticeable improvements in the format and content.

There are occasions where MREmag is able to publish material directly from manufacturers where for whatever reason they might be uncomfortable publishing here directly. I think the site is particularly valuable in this regard.

Otherwise the much wider readership here on RMweb makes RMweb my first port of call in learning about what is going on with British outline model railways. I do find the structure of MREmag makes it more challenging to find specific information and follow discussion of a particular topic.

Agreed - which is why I have it loaded as a 'favourite' and click on the link Monday, Wednesday and Friday, usually first thing in the morning whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Quite often it only takes a few minutes to quickly scan down the headings, pausing to read those of interest and so if the new owners think I'll be spending a long time looking at adverts, then they won't make a great deal out of me - but I'll still be there 3 times a week as there is usually something of interest.

Yes the tea break videos are excellent. I like some of the views expressed on there . RMWeb and MREmag are complimentary. Can't understand folks that use only one or other. I enjoyed it under Pat , I think it kicked off after the demise of Model Rail Enthusiast magazine that to me was refreshingly different. To an extent MREmag has perpetuated this and I congratulate Phil on carrying MREmag on after Pat and now securing it's future. Well done Phil

I've no idea why this is appearing. The site is run in Joomla3 on Amazon servers so ought to be pretty safe from anyone, unless Amazon has been hacked...

I'll pass this over to our IT guy to take a look. Judging by the postbag so far, plenty of people have been on today. The site looks exactly as I left it so unless you have an aversion to BR blue Welsh steam locos, you should be OK.

Hope this helps.

OK, I've had a quick look. It seems Google want us to insert one of their tags on the page - difficult to do with this CMS. There are a couple of other options which our IT guy will have to work on.

Odd that Google seem to be forcing their code on to people's page thought. Can't think why they'd want to do this.

Money, Money , Money!  Their rather odd Business Model is run by collecting details from sites and then have trawled all this info, sorting it and then selling it on to companies to use as pert of their promotion campaigns.

Today's Google search for MRE states "This site may be hacked".

Does anybody know if it is still safe to download MRE on my computer ?

Saw that yesterday when setting up links on a new tablet.

After double-checking the web address and browsing MRE, I sicked AVG onto the job and came up with nothing.   Looks like Google is spreading a bit of FUD there.
