  1. A Showcase of the Best in 4mm Scale Railway Modelling The flagship event of the EM Gauge Society will take place over the weekend of May 11th & 12th 2024 at the now well-established venue of Bracknell Leisure Centre. As usual there will be plenty of opportunity to stock up on modelling supplies with a good range of specialist traders in attendance. In addition, there will be a variety of ‘Show you how’ demonstrations and other special interest society stands. There will also be the EM and P4 test track (now with both analog and DCC control), the EMGS trade stand - selling amongst other things, the Society’s range of EM track and points, in addition to the ever-popular members’ second-hand sales. Their clubroom is at Pinewood Leisure Centre (RG40 3AQ) between Wokingham/Bracknell/Crowthorne, where they have layouts in N, 00, EM and 0 gauge. They also have a live steam track (3.5” and 5” gauge) at Jocks Lane in Bracknell RG12 2BH. New members are always welcome, including juniors (who must be accompanied). Talk to the members at their stand or go on-line at www.bracknellrailwaysociety.co.uk for details or find them on Facebook. The EMGS Test Track The test track, (now with both analog and DCC control) will be in attendance, with EM, P4 and OO tracks available for testing your models, and perhaps test running items from the Members sales stand. Members Sales stand The stand will be located in the balcony area overlooking the hall Trading times will start later than the opening of the show and finish earlier than the closing time. All transactions strictly CASH ONLY. Catering The Centre catering service will be offering sandwiches, paninis, tea, coffee etc. Regrettably there will be no hot food available as after privatisation the kitchen was closed down, as was the licensed bar. As an alternative there is a Harvester pub, The Horse & Groom, by the roundabout at Devonshire Way. There is also a large Sainsbury’s Superstore on the A322 about 1/2 mile towards the M3 which has a Starbucks serving, we are told, their usual fare plus paninis, sandwiches, etc. A short walk from the Centre is a petrol station which has a Waitrose shop attached stocking sandwiches, pies, confectionery etc. A little further on there is KFC with upstairs seating available. The town centre has a number of eating places including The Old Manor, a Wetherspoons pub, although it is quite a walk away. Failing that you could, of course, bring your own

  3. We regret that there were no competitions held at Saturday's AGM/Members' Day due to the indisposition of the Competitions Secretary. Get well soon Richard. Here's the formal part of the day about to get under way, photo by Paul Willis. We are pleased to announce that Steve Flint, erstwhile editor of Railway Modeller is the new Chairman of the Society, in succession to Bill Wyatt-Millington. Ournext major event will be expoEM spring in Bracknell over the weekend of 11th and 12 th May. Meanwhile the Society will have a presence at a number of shows over the coming months, not least at York over the Easter weekend. 4. Croes Newydd's final shed code was 6C, in the Chester division of the LMR. 6D was the code for Shrewsbury.
  5. Milk from Appleby was conveyed to Cricklewood in a dedicated train comprising 6-wheel Express dairies tankers and a -wheel Stove R to provide the Guard's accommodation. it was worked south to Leeds City (North formerly Wellington), where in the Winter 1962-63 WTT it reversed dirction and in so doing changed locos. The onward journey was by means of the MML. In contrast the empty tanks were worked north to Appleby in an ad-hoc manner attached to a variety of freight and passenger trains, one of which being the down 'Waverley'. In later years the full tanks were tripped to Carlisle and there added to other tanks originating in the northern part of Cumberland and southern Scotland and conveyed to London via the WCML. A very informative article 'Special Traffic - Milk tanks from Appleby' was published in Steam Days in January 1997. Milk Tanks from Appleby-Steam Days 0197 p36-43.pdf
  6. The Newton Heath allocation of 9Fs were seen on a fairly regular basis working through Preston on the WCML, but those workings, and their appearances on Summer dated excursion trains to the Fylde Coast, was pretty much all we saw of them circa 1960.

Annual Competition Group 1 Scratchbuilt and Kitbuilt Motive Power This Group is for model locomotives, where the term ‘locomotive’ is defined as any self-contained tractive unit intended for the haulage of non-powered rolling stock. Steam railcars, diesel or electric multiple units and parcels units are not included in this Group. Group 2. Converted and Modified Proprietary Motive Power This Group is for models of locomotives which have been modified from proprietary products. The term ‘locomotive’ is as defined in Group 1. Group 3. Trackwork, Buildings and General Lineside Features This Group is open to 4mm scale models of buildings and general lineside and scenic features and to examples of model permanent way. Location and directions Access by Road and Car Parking M5 Junction 21 is 4 miles from the venue. Congresbury is located on the A370 Weston to Bristol road. Also accessible from the east via A38 (SatNav: BS49 5DY). There is a small car park at the venue with an overflow parking arranged at St Andrew’s Church next door. The church is not immediately obvious, but is accessed through a driveway. Look for signage and that for Vine Counselling who are also based there. There is additional parking in thevillage itself which is a short walk away. Parking on the A370 itself is not recommended. Access by Public Transport. By Train: At the time of writing, engineering work is scheduled for 20th January, closing the line between Weston and Bristol. Replacement buses will be in operation. Services from the south west are terminating at Weston, whilst those from the north are terminating at Bristol Temple Meads. Check with National Rail or First Great Western for updates. The nearest railway stations are Worle 4 miles and Yatton 2 miles. Whilst there is no direct bus service from Yatton to Congresbury, you can walk the track bed of the former GWR Wells Branch (The Strawberry Line). Direct services to Yatton and Worle from London Paddington (yes really), or local services from Bristol Temple Meads, Cardiff Central, Taunton, Exeter and all the way to Penzance. Connections at Bristol and Taunton for Cross Country services to Birmingham and beyond. By Bus: Congresbury is served by regular bus services between Weston-super-Mare bus station, Bristol bus station and Bristol Airport. X1 and X1M Weston to Bristol bus station. Services run generally every 10 to 20 minutes. Check with First Bus for times. A3 - Weston to Bristol Airport. Hourly service with direct connection at Worle and Weston-super-Mare railway stations. There is an hourly X5 bus from Yatton station to Congresbury that also stops at Worle. Timetable X5 (firstbus.co.uk). Bristol Airport is served by Easyjet, Ryanair with flights to other parts of the UK. Overnight Accommodation. There are hotels near the venue but can be a bit pricey. There is however, a Premier Inn a few miles away near Weston Super Mare charging more sensible prices. A visit on line to the local Tourist Information site may very well produce a list of local B&Bs which during January could be a more cost effective source of accommodation. Also, there are a number of other hotels etc., in Weston super Mare which is a fifteen or so minute bus ride away. Refreshments. We hope to be able to provide some limited refreshments at the hall but just a short walk away in the village there are places to eat. There are two excellent pubs in Congresbury serving food, The Plough and The Old Inn as shown on the map. Also Congars Cafe in Broad Street does good food. You could of course always bring your own food.
  9. It's still there. I've just managed to access it using the link as given above.
  10. It looks to be Ribble Leyland PD2 Clive. Pete
  11. I’ve missed the last two running days but I do know that John has built new junction point work on the approaches to the north fiddle yard. These have now been laid and wired up. They afford much more flexibility and more roads can be accessed than previously when it proved impossible at times to have simultaneous arrivals and departures which wreacked havoc with timekeeping. Karl has finished the two Stanier 3MT tanks, which have been tested, but put to one side for now as they don’t fit in with the current September 1962 timescale. They will see service once the change to the 1958 timetable occurs. The monthly operating/running sessions continue.
  12. Hence the goods brake van on the rear. If fitted, this would have enabled the ecs to run without being unbraked, apart from the loco, and allow faster speed.

  14. The Trophies were awarded as follows: Chairman’s Cup awarded to the Best Layout in the expo - Dewsbury GNR (P4). This was voted for by visitors to the expo. EMGS Chairman Bill Wyatt-Millington presents the Chairman's Cup (Shield?) to Geoff Tiffany, flanked by co-builders Dave Carter (left) and Brian Eves (right). The Abbey Trophy awarded to the layout operated in the most prototypical manner - Hope-under-Dinmore (EM) by the South Hants Model Railway Club David Bridges receives the The Abbey Trophy from EMGS Chairman Bill Wyatt-Millington. Malcolm Crawley Trophy - awarded for the best Scratchbuilt or Kitbuilt Locomotive to Pete Hill, for his scratchbuilt USATC S160 2-8-0 locomotive in EM gauge. We have been asked to withold photographs of the painted and finished model pending an article in a forthcoming issue of Model Railway Journal. Pete (left) was placed first and second, we can however show his GWR County class 4-6-0 in EM gauge which was the runner-up. A special award this year went to Geoff Kent, Plasticard wizard. The trophy was created by EMGS member Ian Cross, of Derby. All photographs courtesy of Karl Crowther
