Kyle in a box [file] - 2mm Finescale

Postby Barcaneatpete » Sat Apr 25, 2009 2:39 pm

Good afternoon,

Some of you may be aware of my current layout Coombe Junction in 2mmFS, however I have been long trying to resist the urge to plan a small Scottish layout, originally inspired by Lochside and numerous other layouts by Ian Futers.

The following idea for this layout has been recently generated from a number of reasons, which are in no particular order:

- Inspiration on this forum of the layout in a boxfile threads
- Inspiration from members of the 2mm Association who have recently built small layouts in a boxfile or small Scottish layouts
- Inspiration from other Scottish layouts on this forum [especially seeing all those protypical images of old that keep appearing]
- The opportunity to build a simple layout using the new EASITRAC and the soon to arrive EASITRAC turnout kits
- Something that could be easily transportable [as Coombe Junction is currently giving me some logistical headaches]
- As a counterpoint to BR [WR] which I have always modelled
- A chance to run some loco hauled stock as CJ is limited to DMU's

I wanted to base the layout on a prototype and Kyle of Lochalsh with its simple layout and well known attractive location seemed ideal. The idea is to make the layout hingable and in a boxfile, with a second boxfile for the hingable fiddleyard/cassettes. The track plan is based when the runaround had been simplified and due to width only one siding serves the waterside, the water of which may be modelled at the front. I am also thinking of making the backscene removable which will a] give it some height and b]allow me to thicken the base of the boards. I am thinking foamboard construction for these.

The traditional type of boxfiles that I recall from the UK [those ones in mottled grey card] don't seem to exist in Spain, however MUJI had a very neat A4 type 'boxfile' which seemed a good compromise. Using point templates plans from the 2mm Association together with some photocopied N gauge setrack, I set out a plan and decided a quick mock up model would help realise the project better. I dedicated about 3 hours work to this exercise and have now put some rolling stock on the mock up to give it some scale. Overall size of layout is 1200mm x 120mm. Photos are attached below.

I know I should be concentrating on Coombe Junction [and I still am ] but I just needed to complete this exercise, afterall there is no harm in having plans for that 'future next layout' and what with Bachmann soon to introduce their 24, I couldn't resist with taking the idea to at least first base.

Comments and feedback welcome of course - Pete

Not just built in a box... but literally stored and carried in a box... what an interesting concept.

I like that. A lot.

I like it and I like the approach to prototyping it.

There is going to be some fun with all those track joins.

but I just needed to complete this exercise, afterall there is no harm in having plans for that 'future next layout' and what with Bachmann soon to introduce their 24, I couldn't resist with taking the idea to at least first base.

Now you have started .. just give in to temptation and keep going.

Cracking idea, especially the hinged boards inside the box file.

Kyle has always been one of the places I would like to model.

Couldn't agree more. I hope to be addding something of my own in due course - laying in baseboard structural materials now....

Naturally the 2mm Association has track construction items specifically intended to maintain alignment across baseboard joints. :winker

Thank you - It needs a bit more thought on how I can increase the depth of the boards and the removable backscene to fit....but that's a nice problem to solve :)

Gary - You are referring to my response [shown below] after you posted that image...

Barcaneatpete wrote: :thup Just seeing that one image gets my fingers twitching to want to start sketching out a Scottish layout in 2mmFS.....

Absolutely - That and a few other pics posted. Can't thank you enough for posting it, any more photos like that :?:

Thanks - I think the Association are to introduce some copper sleepers which work with the EASITRAC to help with baseboard joints.......I shall be collecting my copy of Ian Futers second Scottish layout book when I undertake a short flying visit soon to the UK....and that is not going to help temptation!

red death wrote:Cracking idea, especially the hinged boards inside the box file.

Mike - Thanks - I should also like to thank Messrs Yeates and Mallott of the 2mm Association, both of whom have current layouts that inspired me to generate this one - The former for the boxfile idea and the latter for the Kyle location - I have amalgamated the two to form this hybrid...

Sounds like the start of your first 2mm project is getting closer...

Ian - Thankyou - Not withstanding the comments above re my inspiration - I do like the idea of having a layout and rolling stock all self contained in boxes......it even allows other box[s] to extend the layout.....now there's an idea

Thanks - Not sure when that will be....but it is definately 'on the back burner' in my modelling kitchen

Thank you all for your kind comments and interest in this project.

I attach an extract from my sketchbook - as I am modelling the station in 1/2 relief I was considering using a mirror in part as a backscene to complete the symmetry of the bridge ramp and station building...just a thought...

Bravo Pete,

I always enjoy your mock ups and sketches, nice to see the thought process in action. I honestly hope, once the Golden Jubilee Challenge is over and done they consider doing a competition based around the box file concept. Following with interest etc. etc. Should be a nice one :D

Thanks Bryn,

Agreed about the Box file concept.

Personally I wouldn't use a mirror as I think it will look fine as just half the station.

A few thoughts on rolling stock (in chronological order):

26s/27s + 2-4 Mk1s (perhaps more in summer)
37s + 2-4 Mk1s (ditto)
156s
158s

Never seen a 24/25 at Kyle. 08 definitely didn't make it, shunting was done by the main loco (or perhaps by hand originally!).

Not too much in way of freight in recent years, prior to that mainly fish traffic.

27s were very rare at Kyle (possibly never?), being mainly used in the central belt and on the West Highland. Up until 1975 all traffic was in the hands of 24/1s (the headcode fitted variety - lovely picture here : http://rniescottishailwayrchive.fotopic.net/p40819116.html) or 26s. Derby sulzers gives a breakdown of which locos were at Inverness when - http://www.derbysulzers.com/inverness.html

Not seen pictures of 156s at Kyle either, the line went from 37/4s to 158s and has remained that way ever since.

Mike

Thanks for that - v.helpful.

A few comments in response:

- Think perhaps you are right about not using the mirror - can work in some situations but on this might look too much like a mirror!!

- Era wise, its BR Blue with a few large logo 37's for good measure [As I couldn't squeeze one into the Coombe Junction era!]

- At present I can squeeze in a 37 + 3 Mk I's into the station and the fiddleyard - 4 MKI's would need a bit of a rethink.

- Have seen pics of 24 and 26 at Kyle on some threads here ....but alas no 25 and 27's :(

- Perhaps my mixed freight needs a rethink too!
