A lot of people I see start their layout by knocking together the baseboards. I have done that too, but experience has taught me that first thing to get right is the background and general decor.
All the walls are a green shade but the uppers are wallpapered, it could be a forest, a hedge, a collection of hills who knows, but the idea is the eye is drawn to the layout and the backscene is well in the background.

I am moving yet again in a few months so the layout that I had constructed in the loft is now completely dismantled. 1 baseboard has scenery the rest are blank and there are several scenic modules which could be from any era.
I have been having a think as well about the eras that I model and I know more about the modern day era (late 80s to present) than I do about the steam era.
