Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

The odd Hornby Composite

Apropos of nothing in particular I was wondering why Hornby decided to model the 57ft GWR collett composite coach and get the compartment dimensions wrong. For those not in the know it is supposed to have four first class compartments and three third class. Now, whilst the division in the corridor side is in the correct place in the coach one of the first class compartments is actually the wrong size. Its got third class dimensions.   It has occured to me that this coach shares the same chassi

Point construction

My first hand built point is now complete, apart from the tie-bar and control mechanism. I started with the one closest to the rear of the layout, so my dodgy first attempt won't be too visible. Building it was quite a challenge, and has taken rather longer than I expected. I found that the Roy C Link crossing jig was at the wrong angle for a Y point, so I had to solder together the "v" on a paper template. On my first attempt I got the gap between the rails too large and it looked a bit crude,

More Ring Road 'finishing touches'

The OHLE is now complete, which feels very satisfying! Hard to see in photos, but its made a real difference to the feel of the layout, and given it the level of detail it deserves.   I've also liveried up the Tomix tram. This is just the dummy - once the Kato working version is available, I will use this to replace the Modemo tram. The Modemo is lovely, but it isn't a low floor vehicle, which this one is, and does look a lot more British.   Remaining on the 'to do' list are covering a few

Platform trolleys and barrows

I've been enjoying myself assembling a variety of 4mm trolleys and barrows for "The bay".     Platform trolleys from Coopercraft, with loads from the Monty's range. The one with the milk churns is a bit of a cliché I'm afraid, but I can't help liking it and it was a very common sight it seems. The heavy load of luggage on the other trolley belongs to the party of Mr and Mrs Longbottom. They have yet to discover that the maid has forgotten to pack their pajamas.

A little progress...

I seem to have got rather busy since I decided I liked the last set of plans I posted. Having managed to get a day off work and not too much else to do with it, I tried to make a start. Went to the local model shop for some track, got enough to get going (and some Metcalfe warehouse kits), got it all home and promptly fell asleep. By the time I'd woken up again, it was getting a bit dark to go outside and cut wood (better outside lighting is one of those things I keep meaning to sort), so I c

009 comes to Calshot

Hello folks, Last night and this afternoon I have been working on laying the NG track. It has been glued down and infilled using polycell (you would've thought that I would stop using this medium by now!)   I'm also a bit worried about that backscene. It doesn't cover the fiddle yard entrance which means you can't take any pictures of the loco shed without seeing clutter. I'm wondering whether to move the backscene round, but then I would lose the backscene behind the Castle and lifeboat sta

Thompson L1 - kit of parts

The above is reproduced for educational purposes only. It is a comparison chart of L1, V3 and N class. Photos come from the LNER Encyclopedia and SEMG, my thanks to them.   After discussion on Sean's L1 blog, found here: Sean's L1 Blog , I've decided to throw my hat into the ring as I have always wanted one of these locomotives for my Eastern Region themed layout.   The difference between my build and Sean's will be in all likelihood choice of chassis. Sean is advocating the 2MT, and I am le

Grimley works

Now that a few weeks have passed by and after visiting different sections of the new site I thought the time was right to try and get a Blog up and running. Not sure how they work but will give it a go!       Since my last update on the old RMWeb I have finished weathering my rake of HAAs which are now back in service:             Last weekend I managed to finish off painting and weathering the Peter Clark depot inspection platform and this is now ready for use in the depot.

Gloucester Road - New street

Not the final name for my small layout, but I got tired of calling it unnamed; so for now this is it. Took it outside for some naturel light, WOW ! More than pleased with how they turned out.   autumn sunshine     the first delivery   class 57003 shatters morning peace   All these and some others have been put in my gallery.

Cab basics

The cab window beading [34-37] can be fitted before or after assembling the cab. My preference is always to fit such items before as this enables them to be fitted flat and even before removal of the cab panels from the fret. These parts are very delicate and must be at the limit of the etching process. The cab side windows [36] are even half-etched. I found the removal and subsequent filing off of the tags very difficult to do without some distortion of the part taking place.     The ea

A trip to Maplins

Popped in to my local purveyor of all things electronic (been using them for 30 odd years!) and bought a 2.5mm mono plug and matching screened metal cased socket. Soldered the plug to the end of the bulb wires and drilled a 7mm hole in the baseboard. Glued the socket in said hole and connected wires to the 18v DC bus and hey presto     Also bought a new right angled speaker plug - I use these to connect the DCC signal from the controller to the baseboard(s) - This one has screw connections

More work on that 150...

Pretty much as the title says, a little more work on the 150 (although nothing that really makes for a great photo.....)   The process of renumbering my Regional Railways 150 to 150232 is making a little progress, all of the Bachmann numbers are now removed (using the usual microsol method), the new numbers should be fitted at the weekend once I've picked up the transfers. Will also hopefully get a chance on Friday to test fit some new glazing in it..... Once the glazing is test fitted I can

Nothing new

Well, yesterday I had a bit of a running session. All of my loco's, apart from 3 non DCC ones, have been run in the last week. I was going to make up a tool cupboard for G&F, but it is hammering down at the moment and I really can't be bothered. I will be getting wet enough at work this afternoon, with trips to Avonmouth and Portsmouth Harbour. With a bit of luck, it will stop before tomorrow and I may then be a little more enthusiastic about going out to the shed.

Finished MTAs

I've been distracted recently by the re-release of Space Hulk (a boardgame idolised by many of my generation) hence the lack of updates since I've been painting monsters - and working to finish a contract. It's over a decade since I did any figure painting so I'm a bit rusty, but it's definitely good practice for brushwork and related skills. I just need to figure out how to get some of the crazy paint colours onto a railway-related project - Warlock Purple for graffiti maybe?     I've weat

Will the MTA weathering ever end?

I've had a go at the interiors, inspired by this picture...   http://ukrailrolling.../p57256754.html   ...and it came out OK I think. It's quite hard to capture the almost salmon shade (rust plus dust/dried mud?) of the prototype picture but provided it looks believable I'm not too worried if it doesn't look identical     I've started another two and taken some pictures to accompany the process.   Step 1) I stippled on artist's acrylic (the stuff in tubes - the one I use is called P

Yet more MTA weathering

This is a mixture of chipping at the dry mud, then streaking it as per Martin's suggestion:     and the other side (there's only one muddy wagon at the moment). Looking at these, It might be worth doing a little more to get the vertical stripes of thin mud (presumably waterborne) around the thick streaks.     I also fixed some underframe damage to one of the wagons and took a couple of new pictures of the first two since there was a bit of sun this lunchtime. You can see the effect of

Still more MTA weathering

I spent a fair while yesterday working on the MTA underframes with powders, plus painting a few details and doing a little drybrushing and black wash for fake shadows and highlights. I think the drybrushing may have helped to lessen the overly soft finish, since it sharpens up the edges and also puts a bit of fine flecked detail on the panels. I've also cleaned up the data panels/overhead flashes a bit more, painted the shiny grab handles, touched in the buffers again, and rusted the steps and g

More MTA weathering

I've added some more underframe dirt, but it's not quite right - I bought a pot of buff coloured powder to see if that makes a difference, and at some point I want to gently drybrush the underframe but I'm wary of overdoing it. It did help a great deal to realise that the triangular gussets below the ribs don't appear to be in body colour in any of the pictures, although it looks like I haven't fixed this on the first wagon - it's right on the others though. Still haven't really touched the step

MTA weathering

Hi Folks,   I've been a bit busy with work and a new layout project (more later) but finally found time to start transferring my bits and bobs from the old RMWeb. Here's a synopsis of my wagon weathering thread: original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? Originally posted on Sun Aug 23, 2009 4:13 am   I was inspired by Northern Maiden's thread (among others) to take the plunge and have a go at weathering a wagon. More Grey and Green Stuff appearing

Ballasting work and bushes are appearing on the layout, and I promise some more photos later today.   The only thing bothering me now is the capacity of the fiddle yard. I need to make room for a Deltic and 3 coaches, where at the moment I can only hold a deltic and 2 coaches. So a curved point, will be used to make on long siding along the back of the yard, and the 3 way point making up the other 3 sidings. I think that makes sense.   With pay day looming another shopping list is being fo
