Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Gravy Train Portfolio

I have created this Blog to simplify posts so that members can access my portfolio and if so desired post comments etc. As this is my first post in the blog please bare with me if there are errors with posts and may appear untidy.

Griffin & Fudge Ltd

I have decided that the engineering works at the far end of the private siding will be named Griffin & Fudge Ltd. An odd name you may think, but it is named after a real company in Bradford-on-Avon, that closed it's doors for the final time only a couple of months ago, after more than 50 years. My connection is that my late father was a personal friend and business customer and that my oldest friend has worked there for the best part of the last 20 years. So this is my little diorama named a

Trying to get things right!

New forum - new beginings. Lauthern Junction is intended to be a 'vignette' of a junction on a mainline with a freight spur. Portable and located in our spare room it's main purpose is to practise track building skills and provide a 'short' run for my stock as it is detailed and weathered. The leassons learnt will then be carried forward into a larger EM gauge layout when we move house circa late 2010/2011. And then Clay Cross or Aldwarke Junction ??¦.dream on.........     Back to the p

Nutbrook now

As promised, here are some pictures of Nutbrook, the tiny "shelf" diorama I've been building for a friend of mine, as it appears now.   As you can see, extra detail and vegetation has been added. One of the key ideas behind doing this project was to practice with detailing items that I've bought but not been able to use yet on my loft layout.   The scene is set in the spring, so I wanted plenty of greenery and flowering shrubs, etc. The biggest problem I had was making the trees. I used the

Cement Shed - Capstans & Hoppers

I like this blog thingy.   Following comments from NeilHB, Kenton & RandyWales, futher musing has taken place.   I'm probably definitely almost certain I'm going for a 7mm scale layout (sorry, boxfile). Thanks to NeilHB for the info on 7mm standard & NG track.   RW suggested pre-loading the conveyor feed hopper (CFH), but this would necessitate some sort of mechanism to control the flow, something I wished to avoid. So, the upper track will be 7mm NG, utilising the old Hornby 4mm

Fencing

Not much progress on the first Shillingstone module lately, largely because I've been spending my modelling time finishing a continuous run through the other boards. Although it's currently just a loop with a fiddleyard along one side, I can at least run trains again - great fun after two years of not having a proper 4mm layout. Some of the engines I've been fiddling with over the last couple of years are at last getting a chance to stretch their legs, which has been very satisfying - it's been

No.1's Cab and further Tender Moments...

Today I made a little breakthrough. I modified the cab of the Emily loco to better represent the shape of the preserved single. Note, in the above picture I've removed the horizontal handrails but not the vertical ones - I am using the moulded handrails to measure up my plasticard tender body (seen later in this post):     Now I've been experimenting with plasticard this week. I wasn't happy with modifying the original bodyshell as its proportions are too large for the tender I am modelling

Micro Layout - Day 4 - Finished!

Well there we go - its the end of my free time this week, so this is just about done. The ground scatter needs hoovering off tomorrow morning, and there's still one building to clad in card, but apart from that, this is complete. 4 days and almost entirely left-over modelling material, the track is unpainted, the ballast rough, details light, it follows very little thought or planning, but it was fun!   I'll post some pics on Sunday with some stock movements, but this has been really enjoyable

Class 03 chassis kit

Have been playing with my High Level Class 03 chassis kit, which I started on my old RM web workbench thread. Have been fitting the brake gear and rodding. I have to say it's been an absolute pleasure, the kit has clearly been designed by someone who knows what they're doing. No fettling is required, other than opening out holes marginally to the sizes required. Photos attached. Doesn't come commended highly enough.

Ultra Low Relief Warehouse-How I did it

I thought I'd put this up, just as a guide really to show how I did it, there are other ways I just find it easier to do it this way.   First off I print out all of the base layers at draft quality(uses less ink and the base layers will be covered over), then print out all of the SEEN texture sheets at best quality. Now I would normally then spray them with inkjet fixative, this protects them from the glue you end up with all over your fingers!!!   I didn't have any inkjet fixative left so

Episode 17: "Fowler's Ghost"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkupqRpV51s  Air Date:   30th October 2009   These are the stories they tell...   It is all Hallows Eve, and Stephen is telling some ghost stories to the other engines. He tells the tale of a steam engine, scorned by its builder, left to rust, and plotting its revenge...   One of the things I had wanted to do in the series was a proper ghost story. I remember always feeling disappointed at the age of eight, when I realised that the Thomas

Some coincidences boggle the mind...

Since Monday a major situation has been going on on the suburban network around Frankfurt. Late on Sunday one or several unidentified persons broke into a house next to Niederh?¶chstadt Station, which is located to the northwest of Frankfurt. Now, that house, which was the original station building and has had the first and second floor converted into apartments many years ago, also houses the signalling equipment for the entire lines 3615 (Frankfurt R?¶delheim-Kronberg) as well as 3640 (Frankfu

Q1 33006 - the final report - v2

Hi all,   I had just finished writing v1 of this final chapter and was about to add the photos when I had a windows error message come up and have had to start again.   Well, the build is now complete - the cab canopy is on and the coalman has been, the fireman has dirtied his trousers (you would not think so but it is a trick of the flash - honest) and the Johnson's Klear has found another use - the water overspill in amongst the coal.     33006 lefthand side     33006 cab detail

He's fed up of being "just another engine", and wants to go back to the heyday of his career. Stephen tells the other engines a short story about Scott's true greatness...   In the time between making "Day of the Deltic" and releasing this episode, I had gone back home and had a long think about my aspirations for the series. Episode 15X: "The Parting of Ways"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7LOypF6CiY  Air Date:   31st July 2009   These are the stories they tell...     It is the parting of ways...Stephen saves Hawk from the scrapman, and helps Gronk in his rehabilitation at Leeds Central...   I had shot a lot of unseen footage for "Day of the Deltic" and had cut the story back a lot to make it a full half hour special. In many respects, what you see here is very much the "real" ending of that episode, split into three chapters.

Gronk, the diesel shunter, is feeling guilty for his part in the affair, when a magnificent blue diesel arrives and starts causing trouble.   It is after a heated argument with the steam engines, that the Deltic reveals Gronk's infamy...and

Some interesting stock appears

Well last Thursday we had a few guest appearances. Richard, a new member brought along some of his stock, a DJH C2X, (which I absent-mindedly forgot to take a pic of), and a rather nice push-pull, (or as the Southern would have had it; pull-push, ) set built from the Roxey kits:     Mike also brought along one of his many projects in progress, but this one a little more unusual - a D&S model of a Cowans Sheldon 15ton steam crane. Quite a neat model, but reportedly let down by rather va
