Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Railcar's chassis

Following a question I have shown my simple chassis arrangements. Its not going to please the rivet counters but then again I do not think they would use a MTK kit. The seats are old MTK ones for a DMU so are not quite correct.   The main part of the chassis is a piece of PCB board,I then soldered 2 coach W irons to it. I made a motor mount from some brass sheet and added a DC10 motor with 30/1 Romford gears. I added 2 square bits of brassbetween the W irons for added stiffness. 8ba bolts so

The viaduct

The viaduct that will become the shortened version of the 'Ouse Valley Viaduct'. We'll be adding the ballustrading and cut the voids from the supports. (if we can!)

One small step

Now for some detailing of the footplate.... Steps   Once again start by identifying the parts on the fret the footplate angles [7a,7b], the front steps [13,14], the battery boxes [44, 45], cab steps [15,16] and the jackshaft crank guard [17]. Before removing the parts, note that the front step casing [13] has rivets to be punched. Once again I recommend a small parts tray - and a pair of magnifying goggles/headband as we are moving into the realm of parts that are less than 1sq.ft. on the prot

Micro Layout - Day 3!

Decided to tackle the ballast today - doing a really rough job on it, very thinly applied, not painted the rails yet, and going for a really basic look to it (this is a week of fun, and to me, all that track detail isn't fun!)   I've also finished the backscene and the car park scene, and buit the bridge. There isn't much more to do now - once the ballast is dry tomorrow, I can hoover this off, do all the remaining ground texture work, stick on the other buildings, then tackle the steps up to

Improving the Bachmann 150

Another project started (yes I know I havent finished the last one but........)   I mentioned this earlier when I started looking at rewheeling it, but now I've got on with the much more important task of the actual detailing.   As mentioned before the plan here is to cover: Minor chassis improvements (adding extra pipes etc to match that added to the 153) Rebuilding the driving ends chassis to get rid of the large chassis block and over the top AWD drive system, instead going with an u

My first (almost) completed modelling project

Hello everyone,   After a year and a bit of lurking on the old forum and the odd comment on other RMwebbers' work, I thought it was about time I should take the plunge and present some of my own modelling.   My main layout is loft-bound and has been an ongoing project for the last 2 years with very slow progress. As the summer months invariably mean the loft becomes far too hot for modelling activities, I was looking for another way to satisfy my urge to glue bits of cardboard together and p

Tortoise Motor Control Circuits

Work is in progress to make up the diode matix and point motor control boards for Heyside's storage sidings. Basically it's just a single push button to set the storage road required. I'm indebted to John Bailey for Vero board design and component choice for this project. Further information can be found at http://home.cogeco.ca/~rpaisley4/CircuitIndex.html   Here is the first control board, with the breaks being cut in the second.

A dog with a bone? Improving the Heljan 58...

When Heljan released the Class 58 a year or so ago I swore I wouldn not buy one, until some kind soul posted a video link of one shunting an engineers rake during a weekend possession!! With Hattons selling them off at a bargain price I picked up a two tone grey Mainline branded example. The model runs very nicely and well captures the heavy utilitarian appearance of the prototype, but was put to the back of my modelling cupboard as a number of small niggles bothered me and meant modification wa

A Brief Update

I've been catching up from the joy of exams and next day a brief business trip to Tokyo. The only real plus point was a ride on the N'ex and a view out of the hotel over five tracks of suburban lines, two high speed tracks and a guided overhead thing. It's quite amazing at 7am watching Shinkansen after Shinkansen, mostly full, roll through Tokyo.   Wadebridge modelling will now resume but in the meantime I've been doing some further research and found pictures of about half of the loco-shed si

Bristol Barrow Road Shed

Having successfully transferred my Bristol Barrow Road shed thread front the old site perhaps I should give an update on progress since my last entry.   I have spent some time over the past week producing drawings for the various elevations of the shed, workshop, office/mess/stores block, boiler house and sand furnace. These have been sent to a new company, York Model Makers, to produce a kit of laser etched parts for all these buildings. For those of you who attended Scaleforum this company

Progress on Track..

A bit of progress overall since the last update. The trackplan is now cut to size and stuck down on two of the boards, the third needs a little woodworking still on the inner curve while the outer is having its balsa finished.   Andy G was not available tonight but his trackwork for the goods yard entry was on show. Not sure what was being pointed out, possibly that the 3-way still needs its switch blades fitting.   Dick Petter has been busy in the background...   He surprised everyo

14xx episode 5 - turning tyres

I got a little fed up of soldering small pipe clip so I thought I would turn to a rescue job on the lathe for some relaxation. I intend to use AGH wheels on this model, and indeed I turned a set up, but in my haste I made the tyre treads too narrow :icon_frustrated::icon_redface: which is my fault for doing precision work late at night. I wont go into full detail of the process but the main concern is to maintain concentricity of the tyre and wheel, fortunatly the axle hole in the casting is

It doesn't look much different, does it?

There are periods of doing this kind of thing where I feel like I've spent an awful lot of time doing something, but don't really have much to show for it.   I've started on the roof of the 09, with the cab roof getting the most treatment. A mix of weathering powders and hairspray was used for this - mostly Mig Europe Dust, with a little Brick Dust and Gulf War Sand chucked in for good measure.     This is mixed up and applied with a brush. If it goes on too thin, add more. If it go

Episode 5: "Hand of the Fair Maid"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZJiuk7Lp4o Air Date:   10th September 2007   These are the stories they tell...   A new named express, "The Fair Maid" is up for grabs...in the clash of the A1 against the A4, will Allen win the hand of the fair maid - or will Sir Ralph triumph easily?   In the beginning of the episode, it was clear that it was going to revolve around high speed express runs, and it was with that in mind that we wrote this episode. The Fair Maid express was a real

MTK Railcar resurfaces

Re the J52, I put on the wrong size letters and decided to remove them, There was something wrong with the Humbrol paint from the can I used, and in takeing off the LNER transfers it affected the black paint. I gave the damaged parts a sand and have given the loco a respray of black from an older Humbrol spray can. If this does not work then I will have to strip it down and start again   Anyway last night after having the problems with the J52 I decided to do a bit more with the Waggon und Mas

Episode 4: "Nigel, Herbert, and the Cows!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGJGPrRbDnY   Air Date:   4th September 2007   These are the stories they tell...   In which new engine Nigel is absent minded, and inadvertently upsets Herbert, who gets into a spot of bother with some cows...   Of all of the episodes, this was considered to be the funniest of the scripts, and after watching the hilarious stop-motion with the cows walking down the track, and Herbert's terrified expression, it's not difficult to see why!   S

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FzoUmtprZQ   Air Date:   27th August 2007   These are the stories they tell...   Sir Ralph has been sent away to be repaired, and the foreman has procured an engine from another region - a Great Western Pannier Tank - to help about the yard. Hawk and Allen argue, but realize their mistakes, make up, and Stephen is left tired - but triumphant.   Straight away it can be seen that this episode means business: a new title opening sequence had

Starting the Scenery

Now that the electrics are finished:D I can start on the scenery for Hatton.   The large LEDs are a temporary signal - the scale ones are far too delicate to be installed yet.   The foam is Knauf Space Board and the second layer will lift off to give access to the tracks below. I need to build a Scalescenes tunnel mouth and then trim the foam back to suit. The backsecene board is foamcore. To make it bend cut a vertical line on the back every half-inch or so and then break the foam along the

Micro Layout - Day 2!

I was tempted to name this layout "Left Over Street" given that almost all of it is made up of left overs from both Ring Road and Westbrook (the eagle eyed will spot more than a few items from Westbrook on this!), but settled on Jubilee Street.   Now the model is never going to win any awards, but its actually really fun just to plonk things on without any planning! An afternoon's work has brought the layout to this stage - the platform is done, as is much of the backscene - just the big space

Cement Shed changes - blame Marc Smith !

You know how it is, you have this great idea all planned in your head, you know exactly what you want your layout to look like, then along comes some smart-alec with a wild suggestion and everything goes t*ts-up.   So it is with the Cement shed.   Marc asked if I have a track plan - the track was only going to be a few inches jutting in from the left side, enough to hold one hopper wagon over the hopper.... But Marc also said "And added track on the lid is another stroke of genius!" - I hadn

Episode 2: "Veto a V2!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-aXr1c_-cA   Air Date:   20th August 2007   These are the stories they tell...   In which we are introduced to Herbert, a nervous V2 engine (who is openly afraid of cows), and we are forced to listen to Sir Ralph's whinging...again! Herbert then shows Sir Ralph what mixed traffic engines can do (and why Sir Ralph shouldn't run hot while running!)   Episode Two was made quickly on the back of a shed load of adrenaline and coffee!
