Burton Wetmore - Planning Stage

Right, so here's my current N Gauge layout plan for y'all to get excited about. I am currently having my baseboards professionally built (the benefits of employing a carpenter). The layout is going to be a scale 1 mile section from Burton on Trent station to Wetmore and will have a scenic section of 36ft. Obviously, this is not going to be a quick build but it's long been my dream to build this section of line (I grew up on the Midland Mainline). The first 16ft will be constructed first so it can be used, while the remaining 20ft is then constructed.

The south end hosts the station, most of which will be off scene and the North end will have the light maintenance shed and private sidings. The era will be early 90's.

Control will be DCC, with prototypical signal sections etc.

If anyone has photos of the area (any era), I'd be interested to see them.

Overall Plan 36ft.

In the most part, yes it will be a one person project. However, I have plenty of modelling friends who seem happy to volunteer which will be a great help :)

Hi Lucy,

A very interesting and impressive project in the making.

Nice idea to build the first four baseboards as you get a bridge at each end as scenic break...so phase 1 becomes a self contained layout in itself.

Keep considering 2mmFS...

Wow, this project has a very impressive scope and I will be interested in watching it develop. Have you thought about slightly compressing the layout so you get the feel of the place with the added benefit of having a smaller build time?

Good luck with the project.

I worked a short distance from the bridge on Baseboard 5 in th 90s. I recall a larger fan of sidings on the west side which seemed to be full of wagons due for scrapping. Sorry no photo to prove this, Andy Y has expressed an interest in Burton Station a while ago, he may have photos. There is a lively Railway Club in Burton who may be able to help. Are you local to Burton? If so I'm probably in Egg-sucking mode!

Yes Pete, also allows for me to have this part of the layout set up to play with as the layout as 36ft at home will never be able to be set up :(

Yes this has also been considered, but I decided against it after much debate with friends. Mainly because the original plan was to build a scale one mile stretch, have prototypical signalling sections, and in effect run it like the real railway.

Thanks for this info. As far as I'm aware, the depot was used for wagon repair during the 90's, so lines of scraped wagons would fit in with the info I have. Most of those sidings have now been ripped up and/or are very overgrown. Photos of the depot in the early 90's are extremely scarce on the internet, so the Burton Railway Clubs would be a good idea :) I'm not that local to Burton On Trent these days but grew up in Lichfield, but still only an hours drive away. Thanks for the info!

I remember when i was a kid in early 80's and growing up in Lichfield i would sit on Burton station while the grown ups went about doing boring stuff like looking around the shops, You could see lots in Burton then, lots of 45's on passenger, HST's and DMU sets, freight well lots of MGR and plenty to and from Bescot as the Walsall line was still open too, then there was a model shop just over the road to spend some money in hope your project goes well.,

The Skegness trains plied their trade through Burton on Trent with double-headed 20s working them. Are you a member of the DEMU group? They have their annual exhibition (held in early June) in Burton on Trent and this might provide you with any pictorial evidence you might need (some of the members of the society might be local to the area). Hope this helps.

Would these have been Regi Rail Mk1's?

I'm not currently a member, but have been in the past. They put on a great show at Burton On Trent!

It will be interesting to see what you're going to do regarding the fiddle yards. I would have thought the conventional fiddle yard setup will be to cumbersome and prove to be a huge operational headache for a layout of this size.

You say you are going to build the 1st 16ft, then build the rest later. If you are thinking of using a cassette-based system, can I recommend you to see the video of Welton Down - a fine 2mm scale model based on the Southern region of BR. A cassette-based system would certainly be worth considering.

Good luck with this project and I avidly wait to watch its progress - no pressure!

I typed Wetmore Sidings in to Google and it brought up a lot of useful images that might be of use to you. All I have found so far here are 2 pictures of the diesel stabling point to the south of the station.

Hope this helps.

I love the plan, but 36ft!

Will be interesting to see this one develop.

Only went there once back when i was on a canal holiday in 84 or 85 with mum and dad. Got dumped by my parents for a few hours at the station. Quite a busy place as i recall. Only part of the holiday i really remember.

I shall be driving over the bridge on baseboard #9 shortly - the route home from Wetmore Road to get to A38 and home :@)

I grew up in Burton and travelled this line many times. As I recall, the wagon repair depot was there in the eighties, possibly earlier, and seemed to do a good trade on the MGR wagons. There was small depot to the south that always had a few things on it, it closed in the early eighties I believe. There was a good mixture of traffic through the areas and a variety of loco classes that went through.

Good luck with your project.
