A New beginning- Dundee Tay Bridge

Tay Bridge

This is the start of my 2mm journey. All my old stock has been sold and the first new items in 2mm scale have arrived. Some second hand track has been acquired and a new baseboard ordered. The new layout is to be 8 feet long by 2 feet 6 inches wide. Currently the spare room is being decorated quickly before the baseboard arrives in 10 days time.

What is it to be? I had a long hard think about this and decided that what I really wanted was a piece of my happy train days circa 1979-1982. No change of period but a change it most certainly is.I bought the Peco plans book to see what sort of thing could be managed in this space. After some consideration I have decided to create a representation of Dundee Tay Bridge. It will be far from factually correct as I do not want to build a station that is below ground level and can't be seen properly. Not much point! So I am going to use a bit (a lot actually) of artistic licence and model it flat. It will be the same set up. 4 platforms, two bay platforms (2 and 3) and Platform 1 going south and platform 4 going north. Focus will be on local trains DMUs and a couple of London services to Aberdeen and of course Aberdeen to Glasgow services. it will also allow me to create the Dundee to Edinburgh and Glasgow trains from the bay platforms which were mainly class 26 and 27 but often gave a bonus loco!

My brother (Glasgow George Square) reckons I will not be able to see the stuff properly in this scale without a magnifying glass but I am amazed to find the level of detail on the newer Farish and Dapol stuff. The two things that have arrived so far a Class 26 and single car DMU are quite frankly superb. Again DCC control so have been purchased with fitted DCC chips. That, I do not fancy doing in 2mm so I suppose wee Bro has a point!

Next post will be when baseboard arrives and track planning can commence.

... that's funny! where did my comment go? Anyway, what I did say Chris, was that I was sad to see the layout go, as I'm sure are you, but the new stock sounds important so "needs must"... and all that! Good luck with the 2mm layout, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Only just seen this. Dundee is a very neglected area for models, yet very interesting. In former times, East and West stations and the dock railways were also fascinating. Looking forward to seeing more of your plans and modelling.
