INTRODUCING SECTION 2 – LONDON

With so many Agatha Christie stories set in locations around London it would be impossible not to include a London section.

London is also home of Hercule Poirot and the geometrically perfect Whitehaven Mansions, where he lives. In real life Whitehaven Mansions is known as Florin Court, located in Charterhouse Square in the City of London. Those of you who have seen the ITV Poirot adaptations will already be familiar with the buildings distinctive architecture.

Other locations to be modelled will include the fictional Bertram’s hotel from At Bertram’s Hotel, the youth hostel and Hickory Road Tube Station which appear in Hickory Dickory Dock, a Harley Street Dentist from One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, and a mews for Murder in the Mews.

Peacock House located in Holland Park will also be modelled. The house holds the honour of being used twice in the TV adaptations. First for the home of Roger Ackroyd, in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and secondly as Shaitana’s home in Cards on the Table. Only the latter was actually set in London, but as the real life location resides in London this is where it will be placed for the purposes of this layout.

Another real life location to be modelled will be the Isokon Building, where Christie lived during WW2. Although this location has never been used as part of any particular story or TV adaptation it is easy to see how the Art Deco architecture might have inspired stories such as The Third Girl and also influence the home of Poirot.

Finally the Hoover Building, used by ITV as Farley’s Pies in The Dream featuring Poirot, will be modelled. The building is one of London’s finest Art Deco landmarks and it would be a shame not to include it.

As with the rest of the layout, the intention is not to recreate an particular part of London but to cram as many Agatha Christie locations in as possible!
