I've got some baseboards!

blog-0644946001369081960.jpgI am feeling rather proud of myself! OK, it has taken me a week but I now have three (out of five!), baseboards. A big thank you to Wriggly DIY in Stourport of a) supplying the wood at a fraction of the B+Q price and b) cutting it for me. It took a pretty long day to make up the girders and an emergency trip to Screwfix for more screws and some proper hole saws (found the sort with the series of removable blades to be useless), but then had a good looking kit of parts. I made a sandwich of 6mm ply for the sides and 6mm and 12mm for ends. The infill timber was from an old futon base which looks far more comfortable in this guise than it ever was to sleep on!

One thing that really sped things up was the making of some templates that I drilled and then just lined up on the new piece and marked through the screw holes - easily accurate enough for this. Another little thing that I am quite proud of was my jig for accurately drilling the holes to attach the tops - pic in gallery.

A couple of days later I put the kit together, screwed and glued. Fittings were from the very helpful Station Road Baseboards and with a few clamps everything lined up beautifully. I had intended to use 6mm ply for the tops but this managed to warp so badly before I could fix it down that I abandoned it for 12mm. They are now very solid (my 7 year old was using them as a stage!), but of course heavier than I wanted. This should improve though as will cut most of it back once the track is laid.

Yes you are right, the wife was not in when I was doing this but our horribly expensive oak kitchen top was just so ideal for the job.

The trestles are just some B+Q cheapies I picked up in a sale and will do for use inside. I am working on a design for some (much taller!), legs.

I have two more boards to make but as these are going to have traversers they are going to be a bit more complicated.
