Report from the tracklaying gang

There is no gang; it's all me....

I've built my first two points from C&L bits and pieces on Templot templates to 31.5mm gauge - they seem to work very well, as do the Tortoise motors i've fitted below the boards.

I've built some mock up buildings to help get a feel for the layout of the finished station:

I've put together a catch point to protect the main line from activity in the yard:

My next job is to build the engine release crossover which (in my fictional history) has been added, during the war, to allow the station to be used as a terminus after a disastrous landslide wrecked the track bed beyond the station. My story has it that the line was just about viable up to this station, and that traffic beyond this point is not too much of a loss, so the platform on the side of the line away from the buildings has been abandoned to weeds and decay......

Just spent a happy 20 mins or so reading your blog, which somehow I've missed.  Really looking forward to following your progress, the layout is right up my street!  The track has a lovely flow about it and the 31.5mm gauge looks much better to my eye than standard 32mm Finescale track.  Good to see the cardboard mock ups, they really help visualise the finished look of the layout.

Defenitely one to watch I reckon!

Thanks very much, that's very kind Dave.  I'm enjoying this layout so much!  I think it's because i've finally built up enough (limited) skills to make things work properly, and additionally, I spent ages thinking about it and planning it, while I was waiting for a house move to happen.  I worried a bit about potential ack ack from rivet counters and prototype experts, then decided to stop worrying, having seen layouts like Troels Kirk's On30 Coast Line Railroad.

Hi again Rob,

Yep, time spent planning and working out exactly what you want from a layout is always well spent!  Don't worry about flack from "experts", sometimes their advice is well meant and good, other times it's just nit picking.  Either way you can always choose to ignore it!

Best wishes

Dave
