Hunslet Week - Day 6
OK, not sure if this is progress or not ... managed to spend three hours producing this;
Now it might not look much but it is a real milestone! What it is for is aligning the axles in their pivots for the compensated bogie but what it really is, is the first time I have actually managed to do any accurate machining on the little milling machine I bought six months ago and have not got the hang of. On the whole my metal working ambitions far outweigh my abilities being armed only with 'O' level Metalwork (OK it was an A!), but no experience since. Actually, strictly speaking this was not metal work as jig is in wood as this was handy and easily worked but is an obvious design fault. Whole reason for this jig is that just after I soldered the Mk 1 bogie I thought 'I should have silver soldered that'. This hunch was upheld by the fact that Mk 1 fell apart this morning before even seeing any track! To counter this I have also milled some flats on the tube to provide a better key. Big design fault though is that jig is wood and I will be soldering with the blow torch - hmmm... think I might only be able to use this once!
Now that I have got the hang of how the (Imperial) dials work and have worked out a way of clamping the piece, I could now produce another quickly in a more suitable material if I had to.
Well, this is the state of play now with the body and while not all soldered up yet is looking very promising for a nice straight model.
