Horsing Around!

blog-0307313001381360389.jpgI was sat here earlier this evening thinking that I ought to get on with the Hunslet but I had a problem - everything I needed to do involved filing, sawing or soldering all of which are banned in the wifes presence and as she was sat there amusing herself on the computer my options were limited. So this is how I busied myself;

I was probably about ten last time I painted a horse so had to make it up as I went along but pretty pleased with the results. They had already been spray primed in grey so just used a selection of artists acrylics mixed on a pallet (well a little plastic bag actually). By constantly varying the mix and opacity by dipping the brush in water I was able to get a nice varied appearance washing darker colours into the depressions and highlighting ridges with a lighter mix. They will need a coat of matt varnish to tone them down though. Actually photographing them straight away has been very useful as has immediately highlighted a couple of areas that just don't look right so will have to sort them out.

To get back to trains, I did manage to paint the Hunslet cab this afternoon. Have left it a bit brash but as it will be all but invisible when completed I though slightly brighter colours might make their presence felt a little better.

The rust is Modelmates Rust Effect, a really useful water based wash but you do have to be careful about what colour you brush it over as it greatly effects the final colour. This was done over grey primer which is very effective. It is a bit OTT for an in service loco but think it will look good sitting in the dark inside the cab.

The acrylics used on the horses are little tubes of Reeves from a cheap set from The Range. Only problem here is that I only use a few colours from the set and these are now running out. Guess I will replace just these with larger individual tubes.

Sorry forgot to say that the firebox was dry brushed over the top with Gunmetal MetalCote.
