Hi

Now I am back home, I have made a first stab at composing the backscene, using the photographs I took on location at Trefeglwvs near Caresws in Mid Wales. the image below is much lower resolution than the one that will used on the layout, but should give an impression of what it might look like.

I must be born in mind that the foreground will be mostly hidden by the hedges trees and buildings on the modelled area of the layout.

I took all of the photographs at the highest resolution that my camera is capable of. I will require to play around with the colours, because the photographs were taken on a dull day in October, and the layout will be modelled in high summer. BUT with photoshop this transformation is possible.

Don't be tempted to make it too bright and Summery. Colour (and definition), fade naturally towards the horizon as can be seen in the hills in your picture. If you make it too bright it will not look natural. You also don't want the back scene to over power the model. There is an article in this months Railway Modeler about painting back scenes, many of the points relating to photographic ones as well. Anyway, it looks like a fairly typical British Summers day to me!

This is Wales so that could well be a summer's day. Ducks to avoid response from Welsh friends. I think this will do alright I wouldn't worry about too high a resolution too much detail in the backscene can draw the eye away from the model. The article mentioned above is by Andy Peters there is a video sequence showing how he painted the backscene on his Trebudoc thread on RMweb worth looking at.

Taking the photographs for the backscene, was the main reason for my visit to Trefeglwvs and Caresws. The other photographs were incidental.

I have realised that I can change the light quality, by how the layout is lite, ie both colour and

brightness.
