Additive Manufacturing 2

Lisa

Hi

Recently Steam_Julie posted a blog entry where she posted photographs of the cable clamps she made, to fix the DCC power bus to the underside of her layout.

These were manufactured using additive manufacturing techniques, BUT not using a 3D printer, instead using styrene cement and strips of styrene sheet.

You are correct to point out that additive manufacture does not necessarily mean 3D printing. The 3D printer is simply a method for building up a series of very thin layers automatically, but we can do similar things ourselves, although, for practical reasons, the individual layers have to be thicker.

I think some modellers forget that there is usually the option to fabricate a part oneself.  As a scratch-builder myself, I enjoy thinking out ways to solve construction problems, without buying ready-made parts.

I emailed her requesting a photograph, and she then returned it, with the photograph, which I used in this post, attached.

I know her quite well, but although we live quite close, it is difficult for us to meet, because of the length of the journey, using public transport.

I've know Lisa, since we meet at university some years ago, in Southampton! We do continue to meet and communicate outside the RMWeb environment.

On the blog subject most manufacturing processes I use as a modeller, are largely additive in nature. As I am adding material to make the final shape, and the ammount of waiste material is usually very low.
