Kinlochy

The station consists of a 2 chain run-around loop with a low gravel platform, a carriage siding, a goods siding, a pier spur, a coal siding, two storage sidings, a maintenance-of-way siding and a workshop siding with a separate locomotive spur and turntable, and two-track locomotive shed. The platform boasts a simple stone-built shelter.

All turnouts are switched from a small signal box opposite the platform.

The pier spur is typically busy: here a steam crane hoists granite, timber and seasonal produce onto the ferry, and general supplies from the ferry to the train. The pier is in frequent need of attention, as it is somewhat exposed to the Atlantic weather.

From Kinlochy the line crosses the Allt Garbh at Lower Bridge on a 60? wooden girder bridge and then climbs 1 mile 42 chains and 158? at an average grade of 1 in 66 to Lodge. Immediately after the bridge the gradient increases to 1 in 25 for a furlong before easing off.

Lodge

The station has a 1 chain passing loop with a low wooden platform, a coal siding, a goods siding and a carriage siding with shed for the Laird’s Saloon and the four-wagon Stalking Train. An elegant wooden waiting-room adorns the platform.

All turnouts are switched from a small ground throw opposite the platform.

From Lodge the line climbs gently a further 4 miles 27 chains and 202? to Mains, at an average gradient of 1 in 110.

Mains

Mains lies at an altitude of 360?. The station has a 2 chain passing loop with a low gravel platform, a coal and a goods siding, a 2 chain passing siding, three storage sidings and a maintenance-of-way siding. A small two-track locomotive shed with turntable houses two locomotives and the small snow plough. A substantial stone waiting room provides shelter for passengers.

All turnouts are switched from a small signalbox opposite the platform.

From Mains the line covers 7 miles 63 chains to Strathan, initially climbing at 1 in 27 for two hundred yards before easing and then levelling out at the Bothy halt after 3 miles 35 chains and 103? of climb at an average grade of 1 in 250.

The line between Mains and Bothy is the busiest on the estate, with thirty scheduled train movements per working day.

Bothy

The halt Bothy lies at 463? and consists of a 20? gravel platform and bench beside a small raised office (the “token bothy”) which is provided for the token men; besides managing the line occupancy tokens, the token men provide shelter for passengers here as required.

A portable turntable, which can be placed onto the track, connects a 9? length of 12lb/yd track where a handcar is kept for use by the token men.

The turnout to Clachbeg, facing Mains, is switched from the token bothy.

Clachbeg

The 4 mile 32 chain branch to Clachbeg starts at Bothy, climbing then falling steeply to cross a ridge, with several short stretches of 1 in 20 gradient; Clachbeg lies 137? higher than Bothy at 600?; the average gradient of the branch is 1 in 50. A siding serves the quarry, 39 chains from Clachbeg itself, facing the village such that its outbound traffic goes through Clachbeg.

Clachbeg station has a 2 chain run-around loop with passenger shelter and gravel platform, a goods siding and a siding serving the stonemason, and a turntable. A lightly-laid spur leads down to the gold mine.

The station turnouts are switched from a central switch stand; the mine turnout is switched locally.

Falls

1 mile and 3 chains beyond Bothy, after a brief descent at 1 in 29 gradient to the 75? steel plate Upper Bridge across the Allt Garbh, followed by an ascent at 1 in 25, there is the second halt, named Falls, 58? higher at 521?; the average gradient of this stretch is 1 in 90.

Falls has a 20? wooden platform and a simple wooden shelter.

The turnout to Woods, facing Strathan, is switched using a local ground throw.

Woods

The 2-mile spur to Woods branches off at Falls, climbing 264? steadily at 1 in 40 to the terminus at 785?.

The line terminates in a run-around loop of 2 chains and two sidings, as well as temporary track within the woodland.

All turnouts are switched locally using ground throws.

Strathan

3 miles 23 chains beyond Falls the line reaches Strathan, at 653? altitude, climbing 131? at an average grade of 1 in 250.

Strathan has a 2 chain run-around loop with a low gravel platform and a stone-built passenger waiting room, a goods siding, a coal siding, two storage sidings and a locomotive siding with a turntable and a simple shelter; the sawmill is served by two dedicated sidings, one shared with the old mine, where ore from the Clachbeg gold mine is washed.

All turnouts are switched from a small signal box opposite the platform.

Bealach

The Bealach extension starts at Strathan, curving away to wind up the higher glen in a series of sharp curves and short 1 in 18 gradients for 3 miles 58 chains to Bealach, 597? higher than Strathan and at 1251? the highest point on the line. A siding a mile from Strathan serves the dam and its hydro scheme. This extension is usually closed above the hydro by snow from late November through to March. The terminus of the line boasts a turning triangle with a 1 chain capacity, a gravel platform and a short siding, with a small, simple stone bothy.

All turnouts are switched locally using ground throws.
