Trains using the main line in any way are numbered; train movements on the branch lines which do not involve Strathan, Falls or Bothy remain unnumbered.
Train numbers are made up of two digits, whereby the initial digits 0_ to 4_ are for up trains and 5_ to 9_ are for down trains.
(A distinction is made between regular, scheduled passenger services, which use 0_ for Kinlochy–Strathan services, 4_ for Mains to Clachbeg services, 5_ for Clachbeg to Mains services and 9_ for Strathan to Kinlochy services, and other (“unscheduled”) trains, which use 1_ and 6_ for up and down trains, 2_ and 7_ for up and down fuel or explosives trains, and 3_ and 8_ for up and down works trains.)
For scheduled trains the second digits _n refers to the main line scheduling phase:
Note the scheduling of the Clachbeg trains is according to their connections at Mains; thus train 02 will cross train 92 at Mains, for example, with connections to train 42 and train 52.
Scheduled train pairs—out and back—are 01/92, 03/94, 05/96 and 07/98; 91/02, 93/04, 95/06 and 97/08; and 41/52, 42/54, 44/56 and 46/58.
The second digits _n of unscheduled trains is simply a sequential number from _1 to _9: the first unscheduled ordinary up train of any day will thus always be train 11, regardless of departure time.
