Where to get 9mm NON insulated wheels

blog-0182946001399669461.jpgMy plans for building the ultimate pony truck for the (and all the others that are to follow!), Baldwin has hit a snag - the wheels are insulated from the axle thus making split chassis pick up a bit difficult. I know it is possible to add a bridging wire to the axle but as the axle is only 2mm that could be interesting. So, does anyone know where to get non insulated 9mm wheels? Another though I had was to just drill out the wheel to accept the bearing and then mount them on a stub axle but I think there may be some side play issues with this approach.

On a completely different subject (but vaguely related!), not being content with recreating a battle field in 7mm scale I seem to have made a full sized one out of the front lawn. Having finally realised that it consisted more of moss than grass I got down to doing something about it. My cousin had kindly lent me a manual scarifier and I can now see why he was so keen to get rid of it - boy is it hard work! You certainly wouldn't need to go to the gym after using this - only problem is I did go this morning. I now have a lawn that looks like the Somme and probably only fit for a veg in front of TV and probably not any more modeling tonight!

Could you paint the backs of the wheels with electro conductive silver paint such as is used for heated windows in cars?

How about soldering a wiper pickup direct to the frame and mount it so it bears on the back of the wheel or the tread?

I've produced wheels for split-framed OO9 locos by removing the tyres from Parkside wheelsets and pressing them onto turned brass centres, as explained here. I know thats not much use if you haven't access to a lathe though!

That's a thought - my previous experience of such stuff was that it was very expensive and not very effective but a quick look at Ebay suggests that it is cheaper than it used to be and maybe better?

That is very interesting - Thank You. I do have a lathe just not very good at using it! I have had a similar idea but wondered about doing it in one piece with the wheel inner turned down to 2mm to produce a stub axle but this may well be beyond my capabilities.

Current progress is two frames ready made for a solid spacer and the bearings just to see how things work out.

Had thought of this one and could be an option.
