Troublesome Trucks

blog-0500398001400448810.jpgManaging very effectively to divert myself from my aim of getting the actual layout finished I have addressed the problem of rolling stock. This came about as I needed some wagons to test the Baldwin with and it turned out that I only had three that were serviceable - not enough for a layout! I managed to resurrect two quite quickly, coupling had fallen off one and bogie off the other, giving a slightly more respectable five. I did take the opportunity to modify them even further though. I have long since given up on the Wrightlines system for mounting the bogie and have replaced it with an 8ba screw held into the body cross member with a nut and the bogie secured with a further nut. I did find that the wagon body was riding a bit high though due to the thickness of the nut. Rather than file down all the nuts, I realised that there was plenty of spare metal in the bogie so milled down into that a bit instead. They look a lot better now.

Now, the rest of the wagons are going to be a bit harder as the bogies are in various states of incompleteness. Only solution is to work through them as a batch but is awfully time consuming as there are surprisingly complex little structures. After that I will have to build the remaining five wagons and probably then try to get a few more and not forgetting loads for them. Oh Dear! I do have a lot to do !

Very nice, what did you use for the lettering? We've got loads of these to build up and that's a potential sticking point

I got them specially made by Peter Blackham - took ages and cost a fair bit! Now that he has done the one lot though I think anymore will be quicker and hopefully a bit cheaper - hope so as I will need some more soon as well. One other thing to check is that the tyres are fixed properly to the wheels - they have a habit of coming loose and wobbly.
