Urie S15 - starting with the valve gear

I ordered some longer M1 bolts over the weekend which arrived today, meaning I could push on with the valve gear. Tonight's work involved the assembly of the crosshead, union link, and combination arm. I used rivets which I've always struggled with a bit, but (at least for me) I think the trick is to start off with very small taps, rather than one big whack.

I tested fitted the piston valve rod into the cylinder - it's all loosely in place here, but (phew) does work, and there are no clearance issues with the crosshead travel. Surprisingly it all stays in situ as the loco runs, although I don't dare give it too much welly until the gear is secured more positively.

On with the rest!

I spoke a little prematurely as some further test running showed a tendency for the rear bogie wheel to short against the head of the M1 bolt, which I think is fractionally thicker than the supplied one. However, some very slight adjustment of the cylinders and slidebars cured that. The philosophy is to keep testing each element before proceeding with the next. I also soldered up the two etches on the crosshead, so that they don't flop around at odd angles to the slidebars, as in the above image.

I'm now trying to work out the best sequence for the radius rod and all the return crank gubbins. I've also decided that the motion bracket needs to be tucked back under the footplate valence a bit more, if at all possible.
