Simplex's finished at last!

blog-0826131001432221887.jpgOr maybe I am speaking too soon as pretty sure I have said something similar before. Back story to this is that I started one of the Nigel Lawton kits about three years ago, went together very nicely and is a brilliantly designed kit but just couldn't get it to run properly. Not put off by this, I started another a year later and although it was better, it was still not good enough. I have played with them intermitantly since but finally had a Eureka moment when i realised I could do away the with the rather high reving 6 volt motor and squeeze in a much meatier mashima. After various issues with the pick ups, I had them running pretty well and much quieter than before. Then both of the chips in them failed.......

After locking them away for a bit while a cooled down it wa time to come up with a solution. Unfortunately, but far better for my bank account, there is still not a satisfactory sound chip for these but I decided not to give up on the luxury of a power extender. My solution was to use one of the new DCC Concepts Zen decoders, 6 pin direct. I have found it much easier to mess around with the wiring on the plug and then just plug the decoder in. Well not quite 'just plag in'. To get them to fit the rather limited space a bent the decoder pins at a right angle to get the unit to fit around the motor, the capacitor pack then just slid in next to it. I hope you can see what I mean in these pics,

I did need to remove some of the lead shot from unde the bonet though, which I milled out but got a bit carried away!

Pretty easily sorted by building up the smaller gashes with solder then filing and with a secret weapon for the larger one. So, after three years or so I finally have a working 20hp Simplex;

And then another!

Note the extra passengers to add a bit more much needed weight as well as the tin hat and pack which also serves to cover that hole!

Looking great, love the posers of the drivers. Now for a rather random question, what sort of couplers are you using?.

A great layout which I've been following since you started

Was great fun trying to get some figures to not just look like they were plonked there. The man with the jerkin is, in fact, hiding his face in shame as it is one of the worse sculpted ones I have ever seen.

As to couplings, they are zamzoodle. I have got to the stage now where they are working pretty well but they do require a very high degree of fettling to get them working properly. One thing to watch out for though is John's new 3D printed version. Not available just yet but he sent me some to try out and they worked perfectly straight off!
