On3 and On30 couplers..

Another long-delayed job has been sorting out the couplers. My stock having mostly come as three job lots from abandoned projects, I have every coupler and coupler height known to man amongst them.

To get round this I bought two AMS flat cars fitted with couplers to serve as "match trucks" to allow Bachmann locos to pull consists fitted with SJCC or other On3 couplers, these now seem to be reliable after a certain amount of fettling and track trials (the various Bachmann and Kaydee couplers on the smaller stock were by no means all consistent, but I think that's sorted now)

One fortuitous discovery has been the Bachmann hopper cars. These have two great bonuses; although not full-size On3 models, they are large enough to look as though they belong behind the larger Bachmann locos and the smaller MMI ones as well. I don't have any if the smaller Bachmann locos, or a K36 orK37... secondly, the draw boxes are so configured that the couplers can be quickly swapped to either height. This isn't a 100% solution, because the kaydees are smaller than the On3 units, but they DO act as effective, reliable match trucks.

Meanwhile the two K series are off to EDM for DCC and sound, and the mismatched couplers on THOSE will be sorted at the same time..

Curse of autocomplete strikes again...

Seriously though, if I'd had a better idea of the demands that would be placed on me in the past few years, I would have deferred the whole matter until I had the time to do justice to it
