DCC Upgrade

Focalplane

I forgot to mention in my end of year review that a new DCC system is on the list for 2016. I just ordered an NCE PowerCab which was recommended by the folk at Digitrains.co.uk as the easiest to use when it comes to programming (as well as operating). With Legge Lane II (0 Gauge) the locos will all have sound with greater than 10 functions, so my somewhat ancient Digitrax Zephyr no longer supported all the sounds but worse could not access CVs over a certain number. I found this out when trying to alter the chuff rate for the Jinty. It couldn't be done.

Looking at the downloaded instruction manual it does seem to be simpler to operate when compared to the Digitrax Zephyr. It is also possible to expand the system and perhaps use the iPad WiThrottle app as well.

Hi Paul,

Originally, I had decided that my first DCC set would be the NCE, then I was invited to see a very large (private) DCC layout, where Digitrax was the order of the day.  Always a problem to get truly independent advice; as in, if someone has already committed to a system, are they really going to tell you not to buy it because it has issues?

Anyway, I let their 'counsel' sway my decision and so ended up getting the latest Digitrax Zephyr 'Xtra' as my first taste of DCC.  Have been regretting that ever since.  The 'Xtra' can access the higher CV's you mention, but only by a convoluted 'extended addressing' workaround which, frankly, is a PITA!

Let us know how you get on with the new 'toy' (though if you say it is fantastic, I may well sulk for a week).

The NCE PowerCab  is a good foundation on which to build upon. I am about to build a MERG DCC Booster which will increase output to a Max 10 Amps if required.

I have just ordered my third DCC Controller.  That is a steep learning curve, albeit aided by the rapid additions to the original set of NMRA rules.  My other controller is the Bachmann whatever it's called (it's in storage at the moment) which actually is not all bad.  If your Zephyr Xtra is disappointing I can only assume they have lost the plot as this should have been a major improvement in many respects.

I have also seen Digitrax fall behind in loco chip offerings.  I really like the TCS products for non-sound locos, but the Zimo and Loksound sound chips do seem to be at the top of the list of sound offerings.  But I am no expert so don't listen to me too much!

The booster capability was another plus to the NCE system, particularly as I am modelling Gauge 0 and the designer of NCE products is also a Gauge 0 modeller.  Those extra amperes have to be looked after!

The NCE PowerCab arrived today and has been tested. So far I like what I see but I have not taken it through all its many functions. When I do, a report will be available.
