Katyusha and confusion..
Over to the Three Pickerels at Mepal, for a good evenings music. I've been working on Katyusha on the mandolin during my last rotation, a classic Russian ear worm immediately recognised when heard... nearly as good as Thunderbirds, or Match Of The Day. Easily followed and well suited to accordions (Russians rarely play the balalaika, in my experience, but accordions and guitars are ubiquitous) so a good bouncy pub session tune, without the deceptively difficult fast fingering of that Pugwash tune or Sailors Hornpipe.
Coming back, though.... the former roads beyond the Yaxley/stanground area have been obliterated by a vast Amazon complex and a huge estate called Stanground South, to the confusion of my Satnav. Going there, I just head down the A1/A14 until it finds the route via the next turnoff, but coming back is a problem. The usual fenland problem (roads that go nowhere, trains that stop everywhere) applies, plus there are few crossings of the main rivers and dykes.
Present return route is via Chatteris, March and Guyhirn, which is like going to Birmingham by way of Beachy Head, but avoids the narrow, winding fen roads which have always given me the creeps.
This did have the effect of renewing my former acquaintance with the Whitemoor/Ringsend area (see thread on RMWeb) so I suppose it's not all bad..
