Percy undergoes surgery

Stringfingerling

Further to my last entry, I have removed the Hornby cylinder blocks from my "Percy" chassis ready for the re-positioned and altered Smallbrook Studio cylinders. The photos show, how I cut these away from the running plate casting, doing both at the same time to help with a square cut. I have reduced their length to 13mm - still larger than scale for the cylinders on Corris No3, but more in keeping than their massive size as supplied. I figured that the cylinders only need to be slightly longer than twice the crank throw of the Hornby wheels (2 x 5.5mm) but because they are quite large in width, I thought they would look better at 13mm long. I have removed the lip from the end of the cylinders as this is not like the prototype. The last photo shows one of the cylinders roughly in position on the chassis, with a rake similar to Corris No3. The instructions from Smallbrook refer to the cylinders as being pre-drilled, and

shows him needing to fill the bores with Milliput, but mine are not drilled; I'm not sure whether or not this is because I had a conversation with the gentleman who makes them at Smallbrook before ordering; he may have concluded that I would prefer them to be blank, which I do. The next step will be to fit the slidebars and piston rod/crossheads. Coming Soon!
