hi all
Just a couple of shots of the small diesel engine that I started last week. Much of the inspiration for this must go to Neil. He gave me the push. The cab is an old airfix 03 shunnter the body a old matchbox toy with a new under frame from plastic card and bits of fittings from the junk box. It is powered by a Tenshodo spud but on test running needs a good deal of lead fitting to give it the power to pull any wagons. It still needs handrails couplings and small details before painting. It is to be used on both GTD and on my new extention to my china clay layout Porth Eithin.

Nice work from a cheap toy and different! Ideal for Porth Eithin

Looks like part of the good old Matchbox shunter. I'll bet they're getting rare now.

A bit rarer still now! Mind you it's upped the value of the remaning ones by a fraction!

I don't get it. I don't mean to be rude but why? The rest of the layout is superb, especially the buildings. It looks so much like a real location that I recognise (Great Rocks Junction?) You've obviously got a great deal of modelling skill so why spoil it for a ha'pennorth of tar? i.e making up a fictitious shunter out of bits and pieces. Especially when there are suitable kits of prototypical shunters available. The Judith Edge Steelman Royale or the Sentinel/Rollls Royce would be ideally suited to the location modelled.
It's one of my pet hates when people pay great attention to the rest of the layout and the mainline stock, moaning that so-and-so wagon has got the wrong brake gear or such-and-such tender had the wrong axleboxes but when it comes to industrial shunters anything goes.
I'll get me coat now. Sorry.

In fact the two we are going to model for GTD will be based on two rebuilds of 0-4-0 steam shunters into 0-4-0 diesel shunters as converted by ICI back in the late 60s, RS/8 and RS/142 'Trevithick', which at first glance would appear to be total works of fiction but are based on real examples. Besides it's Peters layout, so he says goes IMO. As Peter said, he got the inspiration for his fictional shunter from Neil Rushby, who I believe made another fictional shunter for Martin 'Wales' Jones. I suppose we could model the Ruston shunter that was trialled at Tunstead in the 60s as well along with the class 08 lookalike 0-6-0 EE Diesel-Electric shunters, both of which we have photos of working at Tunstead.

Hi Dave
i take your point but it was just a spur of the moment to make it before I got into the more serious modelling again on the buidings. One thing is that it is not totally freelance has it is based, I admitt loosely, on a North British Co. design from the early 1950,s of which I have some shots in a book. The main differances are the font cab windows and the length of the bonnet. The exhust when built was differrent but in later years before it was I belived scrapped it was fitted with the exhust as modelled. The main shutters that are being made for it are copies of ones made in the South Works Shops as paul has stated.

I'd like to be able to knock something like that up as a bit of playtime! Nice loco. I have a few of the Matchbox shunters, but couldn't bring myself to cut them up like that!

Likewise, I cant see what harm there is in 'freelance' loco's even on a 'serious' layout, besides once its painted and somebody sees it at an exhibition someone will swear theres one just like it somewhere anywhere! , 'till I can find the necessary 'wedge' for a DJH Barclay Saddletank, I'm going to have a go at hacking up a Hornby 'caley' pug to represent an NCB loco, if it turns out half as well as this I'd be well pleased!
That is another factor with these no doubt well researched 'kit' industrials, they aint cheap, so if you can knock something together as well as this then all the best! the diecast section has nice rivet detail and no doubt adds useful weight to the loco

Well I am back at doing some modelling of the building kind now after a hectic last few weeks. Not much has been done on the main layout but hopefully that will change in the next few weeks. Have now started to paint some of the smaller items on the buildings realising that I can not now get to all the fine details due to the increasing pipe work and other fittings that are being attached. The detailing of the vertical lime kilns themselves is now under way (pictures to follow) and some of the old derelict shutes and other small objects, one of these being the funny little round concrete huts. Paul and I saw these at Tunstead but until we visited the site did not know what they were. In fact they are portable blast shelters for the workmen when blasting was taking place in the old days
These have been made from the small plastic retainers from inside Kinder Suprise Eggs. They are glued onto a base and the door is built up with micro strip and daz modelling clay then sanded down.

Hi Grimleygrid
Thanks or the comments. It is hoped that the club is holding a small show / open day at Talsarn village hall in December when we hope to have GTD up and running so you are most welcome to bring the 60's. Between Paul and myself we have about four i think. The buildings will not all be finnished but it is hoped that some of the scenary will be done. Will post on here in the next week or so the dates when confirmed. May be looking for operators for that weekend as well as my other two layouts will be there together with the clubs 1mm layout and two other members layouts so we are a bit short of helpers.

The plant you have built appears to me to be to professional standards....marvellous....and as far as I am concerned, if you want that shunter, its your layout for God's sake.

Hi all
Just a quick update. Have spent the last 10 days still on the wiring, finished all fiddle yard and am on main part now putting point motors on. Am posting photo of rock faces on GTD because we have had some Americans in and a guy from down south who all know the area very well and say that the rock faces are not very good and don't do anything for the layout. Just wondering whether should hack all faces off and start again as I know they are not dead correct but had depressed me a bit considering the amount of time I spent creating them. Comments please.
Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
Although I'm an N-gauger, I've been following this thread with particular interest. I'm especially fascinated by Peak Forest traffic, and I am in awe of the quality and detailing of the large scale structures you are building.
As for the scenic modelling, and specifically the rock faces, in all honesty it is very difficult to judge the quality merely from photographs.
However, one observation I would make is this: your posting suggests to me that the comments from your visitors struck a little bit of a nerve. Is this because, having put in all that work, deep down you yourself are not totally convinced by the rockfaces?
I hasten to add that I speak from experience - there have been occasions when I've been honestly unsure whether I've "nailed" a thing or not and therefore asked someone who I trust - possibly seeking validation. I'm simultaneously angry and yet slightly relieved when they confirm my fears - that actually, something I've spent a lot of time on needs a little bit more work!!
Hope that helps!
cheers
Ben A.
