Bakewell canopies- First stage of construction

It's been a long Bank Holiday weekend so it gave me a chance to make a start on the next stage of the Bakewell station project- the canopies. This would take the model building back to the condition prior to the line closure in 1968 rather than the smooth lines of the present day building. 4 glass canopies were needed supported by 5 LMS style columns and detailed brackets. These were assembled from laser cut components supplied by York Model Making. The columns needed a substantial amount of cutting in order to bring the support height down to the correct level
The assembly proved to be extremely challenging and super glue was used for the strongest bond possible. Much support was needed whilst the glue was setting which was extremely frustrating at times taking me hours to do .
The canopies will need some more detailing using Plastruct components; I bought these from the Railex 2017 show at Aylesbury last Saturday. There is still a lot to do, but at least I have made a start. The enclosed photos show the process so far before the extra details are added

Looks good. Will you be adding glazing bars and gable ends to the canopies Rob? Can I ask how you made the ridge detail on the station building proper?

Best

Do like your work Rob. Has inspired me to scratch build from 3.0mm foam board a oo scale version of Garsdale/Hawes Junction Station and  associated buildings.

Cheers from NZ

Hi Guy,

Thanks for your kind feedback on the Bakewell station project. Yes I will be adding glazing bars to the canopies and will try to replicate gable ends as faithfully as possible. This is the next stage of the process.

The ridge details on the main station building were laser cut for me by York model making for CAD files I sent them. However, they do loads of generic ones on the tiles section of their website so it could work out cheaper.

I enclose the link and some other pictures of the real canopies

Hi Phil,

Good luck with the project. Haven't used foam board myself as mine was made from 2mm laser cut MDF which is quite strong. I also used 2mm grey card painted both sides with emulsion paint for my viaduct (see my blog entry)

However, give it a go and see how you get on.

Best regards, Rob

Thanks Rob,

enjoyed look through the montage, you've done your homework on this by the looks and looking at your representation of Bakewell it's paid off. Please keep use up to date.
