1/16th scale Sopwith Camel

Apologies for the lack of blog entries over the last few months, life sometimes gets in the way of modelling! I’ve managed to rupture my Achilles’ tendon, so I’m hopping about in a Vacoped boot with my ankle locked in an equinus position.  Getting up the steps into the workshop is a bit of a hassle, so as way of compensating for not being able to play trains I’ve been building something not railway related🙂

I’ve long been fascinated by WW1 aircraft and used to build and fly radio controlled balsa versions, before returning to railway modelling 20 or so years ago.  Hasegawa make a 1/16 scale plastic kit of a Sopwith Camel without its fabric covering, so all the ribs and stringers are exposed in the finished model.

I’ve fancied having a go at simulating wood grain using oil paints on top of a base coat for a while now and after watching videos on YouTube felt confident enough to have a go. Hopefully the results on the model are convincing, it certainly looks better to my eye than the brown plastic the kit was moulded in!  I wanted to represent the turnbuckles on the rigging wires which the kit does not include, but found some suitable tubing in a fishing tackle shop meant for tying flies 🙂

It’s been an interesting diversion and I’m pleased with the end result, but I promise I will get on and finish that rake of coaches I started two years ago soon!

Here are some pictures of the finished model.

The varnished wood finish is very convincing. I hope there's no danger of you being lured into modelling one of those teak-carriage lines!

Hi Stephen,

Glad you approve of the wood effect, it took a couple of goes , but the beauty of oils on top of acrylic is that if you don’t like it, a wipe with thinners removes all trace of it, leaving the base coat ready for another attempt🙂

No chance of changing allegiance completely, but I quite fancy a family saloon from a “teaky company” making an appearance at Sherton from time to time🙂  My recent trip to the Bluebell tempted me to the Dark/Wood side!

just needs some doped linen to finish it off

Wouldn’t that defeat the object of the kit, which is to show the wooden framework?

You could possibly cover some sections of the wings and fuselage with linen, and model it as both "exterior" and "cutaway showing the interior".

You have made a superb job of that, all the wires must have been a tough challenge. Full marks for the wood grain too, oil over acrylic, I must have a shot.

I have decided to stop buying enamels, I gather they are vanishing from sale and the recent stuff is dire so seeing how folk are using other paint types is very useful.

Hope the tendon gets better quickly.

Hi Broadleaves, I could cover some sections as you suggest, but personally prefer the look of  just the open structure.  I’ve often fancied building an etched brass loco, polishing it and then lacquering in clear varnish rather than painting it, I guess this is similar 🙂

Hi Dave,

Thanks! I’m glad you like the wood grain and yes the wires were a bit of a challenge 🙂  The worst part was remembering to thread on the turnbuckles before fixing the wires in position!   Definitely have a go at wood graining, there are loads of excellent tutorials on YouTube and it’s actually quite fun to do!

Me too! I’ve been using Humbrol in particular for the last 50 years, but recently they are hopeless!  Tamiya acrylics are fabulous, they cover well, seem happy to brushed  or sprayed and if you want Matt paint unlike Humbrol you actually get it!  I will still use Railmatch enamel paint for painting stock because I like their colours and it sprays well,, but for everything else it’s Acrylics for me from now on🙂

Thanks Dave, so do I! I’m seeing the consultant tomorrow, hopefully progress has been made🙄

I'm not into aeroplanes, but good modelling is good modelling and that looks superb, the "dashboard"? looks really fine.

As others have said, it will be a shame if you don't build at least one coach with a woodgrain finish of that quality.

Mike.

I’d really like to build an example of a wood grain finished coach, I just need to find a suitable kit of a prototype that might have strayed into rural Dorset🙂  If you or anyone else can point me in the direction of a likely candidate I’d be delighted!  I know a reasonable amount about the good old GWR, but my knowledge of other companies is pretty sketchy I’m afraid.

Perhaps but then it would still be visible as shadow underneath with light coming through it, just as it does on the real thing. It's obviously not possible on normal plastic models so I think it would be great.

You know considerably more than i do about the GWR Dave!

Whilst it might be cheating a little, in your modelling period could a "foreign" wood grain coach be in some form of departmental service?

Mike.

Hi Jeff, circa 1905

A little early for Metropolitan Railway Dreadnought teak stock but if an excuse could be found for another GWR/Metropolitan link maybe an eight wheel rigid coach from Roxey Mouldings.  Etched brass with tricky overlays but nice kits.......

You have done a superb paint job but for anyone not so skilled Model Airways does a wood and metal 1/16 kit, £279 on Amazon.

Artesania also do a 1/16th scale Fokker Dr1 which would make a lovely companion model🙂

Hi again Jeff, I couldn’t find the Metropolitan stock on Roxey’s website, but they had this rather lovely luggage van🙂 7C74 LCDR/SECR/SR Grande Vitesse Luggage Van

I wonder if such a vehicle would have been chartered by an affluent family looking to move their possessions to a new house in Dorset? It would make a lovely addition to my Sherton Abbas branch stock!

Im surprised there aren’t more manufacturers making family saloon carriages, I’d love a variety of different companies vehicles along with some compatible horse boxes to make a race day/ hunt special!

Well, read the OP and respond to the intentions of the builder, as I did.

Alright, there's no need to be so obtuse.
