A CR D37 twin wagon build part 3


 

The D37 wagons were paired and coupled together with a shackle of which there is a drawing in the wagon book.The idea was to keep the buffer faces in contact when running similar to a screw coupling. Long sections with pins through the coupling eye and a short loop in the middle.

 

This is my attempt at it. The buffers are on very soft springs, actually a bit of pb strip from an old clock escapement, the shackles are wire with a pin soldered to just the shackle. The centre loop is copper wire for now. I have had it on the track for a test, it does seem to work and the buffers stay in contact on curves.

Some basic paintwork done, beginning to look like wagons.

They are rather light so I think a weighted load is needed. A section of ductwork, possibly for something marine with some lead inside.

They look good as always, Dave.

 

Can I ask: I've been pondering the spring mechanism. Is there any functional reason why the spring wire is connected between the buffers, or is it only because it's simpler/quicker?

Hi Mikkel, 

 

It is effectively two lever springs. The pb strip is soldered to the tag on the pcb chassis at the centre then soldered to each buffer. The hole through the buffer casting is generous.  It is fiddly to do and you have to be fast near a plastic wagon. 

 

I use internal springs if the buffer casting is brass. However with a softer whitemetal casting I find that the spring tends to dig in and it all jams up.

Thanks Dave. I agree about sprung whitemetal buffers, hasn't worked for me either.
