North American Rails (Working Title Oak Creek TR)

Afternoon Everyone

I am currently in the final stages of putting together my next project after a number of false starts and changes within scale.

The current project in the stage is a Short line/industrial layout based loosely in the  US north east mainly around Wisconsin  and Minnesota with potential Canadian influences, the layout will occupy a location of approximately 2330mm by 550mm  with a detachable fiddle yard and off scene storage. The plan is there to allow me to do switching operations and run various 4 axle locomotives , with designed based off various persons including James Hilton and Lance Mindheim's off there principals and advise from there books.

In terms of real prototypes i was quite heavily influenced by the  New Berlin Industrial lead on the UP Waukesha Job with the various images and short trains igniting my North American Railroad Itch. The model will be in HO scale with modern era and i have attached an any rail plan for peoples honest opinions and how they think i could improve it, the track has only two points but serves two industries and a small team track/transload facility, with the inclusion as i see it of roads that cannot be blocked for long durations, access gates and other cars preventing an easy operation session while adding to the fun and increasing operational ability.

The two industries are a packaging company and a logistics company with a small transload to allow a variety of traffic for smaller costumers.

The track i intend to use due to a shortage of funds and not wanting to waste perfectly good points is a couple of PECO code 100 medium radius points and one large radius point, with the rest of the track been made up of peco code 100 concrete and timber flex track.

The question i have is there anyway that i could improve these points and track to make it look more North American without having to purchase new track, by increasing sleeper spacing/ splicing longer sleepers in and adding point throws just to improve the prototype any advice would be great please.

I do have the intention of using various ballast to simulate old and new along with weathering the track and picking out individual sleepers along with the various track side paraphernalia, any advice for the track or comments on how i could improve my track plan would be greatly appreciated.

Big Thanks Ed

Nice concept.  In terms of giving track a more North American look, comparison between Peco Code 100 and their more specific North American offerings in Code 83 and Code 70 suggests a tighter sleeper spacing and more sleepers / ties per yard.  Might be worth experimenting with a short stretch and then seeing what it looks like joined to one of your points / switches.  Just a thought, Keith.
