(12) A Bit of 'Topography'
Tasks to do on the first scenic baseboard are gradually being ticked off. I really feel like we're nearly there!
A major worry was getting the track plan stuck down. For various reasons it seemed best, if a little unusual, to do this before I fixed the top onto the underlying framework. I had drawn a grid on the plywood so I could keep a check that everything was aligning properly (photo in the last instalment). I used contact adhesive from a tin to stick the paper down. This all worked out much easier than I had expected - apart from one sheet that insisted on twisting slightly. I had a challenging job removing it so I could glue a replacement in place.
Reassuring I suppose, as it proves that the adhesive is doing its job. The replacement sheet went down without a problem.
I then proceeded to do a bit of trimming here and there to cater for the sloping site, amongst other things. Whilst the station site is generally flat, the main road outside the station slopes down over 20ft (40mm) over the width of the baseboards. I shall keep the trackwork on the level, but I cut the baseboard down a bit at the end to allow for the sloping street and buildings along the street. I also cut the curved edge for the backdrop. Here's a general view, with the baseboard top temporarily in place...
...and a closeup of the corner...
The curved edge for the backdrop was cut with a handsaw as it was too deep for my jigsaw. I am rather pleased that I got it just about spot on. This will be lined with thin plywood which will also become a former for the curved backscene in due course.
Otherwise, I still have to cut out the holes for the turntable pits and a bit of tidying up to do. Only then can I stick the baseboard top down permanently onto the framework.
