(19) One Step Backwards and Two Forwards!
The curvy back frame member for baseboard two was almost successful. Unfortunately, I misjudged the length of the 15 inch radius section and ended up with a piece that didn't quite curve round far enough. Otherwise it was really good!
Undaunted, I had another try - this time using the actual baseboards themselves as the jig. I decided to make this one full height, including the backscene. Here is picture with the clamps holding the 3-layer 'sandwich' in place whilst the glue sets. I used MDF which allowed me to use full-length layers without any joints. I shall protect the lower edge with stripwood to finish it off. This should protect the MDF from damage.
The structure is not yet glued to the baseboard. There is a temporary section of the backscene on the left, clamped to the first baseboard. This is to give a transition curve between one radius and another. This section will be discarded once the glue is set.
Here is the view from the other side, with the track bed temporarily in position, to give a very crude idea of how the finished item will look.
The pictures suggest the backscene is slightly distorted. This is an effect of the camera angle. In fact, it is perfectly upright all the way round.
Apart from a minor problem at the far end, where the outer layer split slightly, all looks fine at the moment. The problem can easily be fixed once the glue has dried. I can then cut the 'sandwich' to size and fix it to the baseboard permanently.
I have also started laying sleepers. These are PCB 9ft (18mm) sleepers for the plain track from the 2mm Scale Association shop. I shall be building all the track in situ on the baseboards, as per my normal practice. Soldered construction to represent early flat-bottomed-rail track. The sleepers are laid to represent 22 foot 6 inch rails, based on prototypical drawings. Laying them directly on the baseboard like this gives a more 'rustic' appearance than using a jig. There is no need for a ballast shoulder here, as the track will be bedded into the surrounding scenery on this baseboard. Board two will be slightly different in that respect.
This will be left now for a couple of days as I am busy with other things. Then, I shall take all the clamps off and hope for the best!
