Brake Force Runner - Too Quick And Dirty

The Brake Force Runner has always been one of the more interesting coaches I've seen - a completely smooth Network Rail MK2 so naturally I thought "I want one for my layout".

So getting into this, I bought four coaches from an eBay seller which were R4992, R4995, R4946 and DC 460000 ((I believe originally from class_66_driver) That's a surprise tool that will help us later) given that R4946 is a plain Mk2 I thought it would be perfect to convert so I also bought a stick on sheet of the sides of the runner off a separate seller.

I removed the underbody from the rest of the Mk2, cut out the sticker, aligned it, stuck it down, and then reassembled the coach. Now, I don't know why I even thought this would be a good idea, as all the contours around the windows and the handles prevented it from sticking flush to everything. I guess you get the quality you pay for.

Needless to say, I hated how it looked and decided to remove it and actually put the effort into making my own instead of cutting a million corners.

Those vinyl sides seem quite popular on sites like Ebay at times, but I've never been convinced that they look very good, apart from a few that I've seen applied with a lot of care and preparation by very experienced and careful modellers. They have their place, I suppose, for those who can't paint and/or just want something basic, but there are very few prototypes where I think they can really be "good". I'd say, though, that a flat-sided NR Mk2 is one where they do have some possibilities. If it were me, I'd start by removing the window frames, then use carefully-cut pieces of plasticard to fill the windows (pre-made window blanks are available on Ebay for the ex-Dapol Mk 2, but not the more modern version). They don't need to be perfect, as the sticker will cover imperfections. I'd only use the bit of the sticker between the doors, so as not to cover the door lines or windows.
