Using the Bachmann class 37 to create a Mirrlees 37/9 'Slug'

It's been a while since I've posted anything in here, just been busy with so many things. I've documented the full story of this project on the DEMU forum, however following a recent WAG meeting there seemed to be some interest in it so I thought I'd share it over here as well...

I've wanted to do a new Slug for some time (I did one on the old Lima model a few years ago) the old model was not up to my current standard for use on my layout so I set about building a new one, now whilst you can get conversion kits for these loco's they are designed for the Lima model and are thus not to scale for the Bachmann 37... The etched kit is a scale foot to narrow on the width IIRC. Following a bit of a mad suggestion by a DEMU member I then set about seeing if it would be possible to scratchbuild one from plasticard.

The loco being modelled here is 37904

Here is a brief story of the project in picture form, starting with the model as it was not long after fitting the new roof...

Next we see a shot of the new roof in place before final detailing was started

Here's a photo showing the finished roof panel in place prior to final tidying up and primer being applied

And finally a shot showing some of the front end work required for this loco... 37904 had differeing headcode styles at each end.

That's it for now as the loco is now ready to enter the paint shop, I'll of course post up some photo's of the finished article.

Comments and questions are of course welcome.

Cheers.

What was the donor model for the project?

Are you going to use cast bogies for the loco as you did for the dutch 37?

It looks like a really lovely piece of work.

Hi Lukasz,

Thanks the kind comment smile.gif

The donor model was 37672 in Transrail livery, unless you change the bonnet side grilles it is only suitable for doing 37904.

This model doesn't require cast bogies so I won't be going down the same route as per my dutch model of 37012.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

EWS one?... If you mean the base model of 37411 which is becoming sister 412 then yes progress has been made on this one. It is now ready to enter the paint shop and will be painted alongside 37904... They are in the same base livery after all, albeit 37412 which requires Transrail logos.

Not sure if that one is justified a thread of it's own as it was more of a detail and repainting project rather than a heavy conversion as with the Slug.

Glad I could help.

Cheers.

Blimey! I've just found this again. Not really keen on the blog idea for myself, I much prefer doing things in threads but I thought I'd better report that this loco is all finished having gone through a revamp in recent months.

Cheers
