Hello :)

I was holding off posting an entry until I had something worth talking about and now I think I have.

FINALLY! I have managed to get my little pannier tank engine working on the layout. Its quite a serious milestone for me which has been about 4 years(ish) in the making, Im very happy :D

It took a bit of head scratching but now electrically everything works. I had 3 faults with the wiring on this board in the end..

1. I had a short across 2 tracks on a piece of veroboard (a bit of solder)

2. I had wired the relay that controls the building lights the wrong way round

3. I had wired the LEDs on the control panel the wrong way round (this one took me about a week to figure out!)

I have a couple of points to tweak a bit as the engine struggles going through them but other than that it all works on this board (the most complicated one)

Finally a photo of the control panel which to me looks a bit cool...

If it had some water in it it'd look like my PC ;). Very much a contemporary control panel that though with the blue LEDs!

Well done Missy. There is something magical when you first get an engine to run on a layout.

Hello :)

Thanks guys. There are a few tweaks still to do on that board until I am happy but the worst of it is out of the way now. The second board 'should' work fine as there is nothing complicated on it, al of the connections and control is on this board.

Is your day job making control panels for spaceships? That looks like it belongs on the Enterprise. Very impressive.

Wins the award for best control panel ever! I really do love the level of detail you are putting into the presentation of the layout!

Congratulations Missy,

I think the lights are going to have to be turned off at Oxford for a few minutes just to see that control panel!cool.gif

Beam me up Missy! Does the panel go 'beep' when you press it? ;)

Congratulations on a successful power-up.

Hello :)

Thank you all, Im glad you like the control panel. I just wanted to try out something different to see if it worked, no doubt it will come back and bite me in the rear sometime! FYI I got the idea for it from those illuminated emergency exit signs.

If it ever gets that dark then people won't be able to see the trains anyway ;)

Enjoy playing trains testing the layout!

Hello David smile.gif

Good point and well made. One of the intentions is to operate the layout in the dark hence all the little bits on illumination dotted around the layout, wether it works or not is another matter but it was worth a try.

As for the playing trains testing the layout bit to be honest it doesnt really interest me that much, I guess thats why its taken this long to get anything working. For me the real fun is in the building, its going to be interesting at shows for sure. I wouldnt be that bothered if the layout is scrapped after its finished as it would mean I could start building something fresh. The only reason why I can see not to is its something to test my engines and rolling stock on.

I think there's a reasonable chance of a sensible offer it you were to place a 'For Sale' sign on it.

If you build another one you would have to do all the electrics again!

Good point there Don!

Im sure next time I could make a better job of it though. As with everybody else its a big learning curve and as always the next time you do something its usually better.
