Taunton Central Modern Image N - Introduction

This is the third version of my first permanent layout. Having just moved house, I found for various reasons that I couldn't use the loft as a home for my railway. However, I am able to now use a 12ft x 6ft concrete shed, albeit shared with bicycles, lawnmower, and a few other bits.

My railway is N gauge modern image, circa 2008-2010, enabling me to run some of the latest Dapol & Farish models. The station is a "what might have been" alternative history of the railway through Taunton: The GWR built a terminus station and small goods yard in the town in the 19th century, and when the rails arrived from Exeter, a triangular junction was created not far from the terminus.

The model is designed for one man analogue operation. I have just one Gaugemaster Combi controller. I may add a second controller in time, but this depends on how my fiddle yard evolves, as unfortunately, I tend to plan the layout as I am building it!!

The station has 4 platforms, plus 2 sidings on the near edge of the 6ft x 1ft baseboard. Each platform can accomodate a 5 coach HST, while nearest 2 platforms can take a 7 coach charter, or 6 coach, if top n tailed.

Sounds a nice proposition. I was going to ask about a trackplan, but I guess we'll have to wait till you've finished the layout ! The only question I'd raise is will you be satisfied in the end with your ad-hoc approach ?

Thanks for your reply,

Ballasting and platforms are complete on the scenic board, will be posting pictures to show the track layout. Regarding my ad-hoc approach, I am trying to think things through in my head as much as possible before building scenery, so that I get a pleasing result. I have a computer generated low-relief row of shop fronts of my own design that I will recycle to use on the current project. This will help to add realism to the model.
