Work Experience with Chiltern Railways - Day 1

Hi Guys,

Well as you may well know, I'm doing my Work Experience with Chiltern Railways at their Aylesbury Depot. I started it today (Monday 26th April) and will be there for 2 weeks until the 7th May. So here's a run through my first day under the 'employment' of Chiltern Railways:

My Work Experience placement starts at 8:00am, so I got the train from Great Missenden Station at 7:14am, with it getting in at 7:30am. After hanging around the station for 15 minutes, I went over to the Depot to start my placement. Having met my supervisor and the Apprentice I was working with for the day, as well as getting my overalls for the day, I was taken on a Depot induction, this involved Health and Safety hazards around the site and a brief tour.

Once this was completed, My Apprentice and I went off to work on a Class 165. We started by replace a driver's side Door closing siren. This was followed by fixing lose and stiff arm rests, during this work I was just observing. Then a spot of Lunch! After this I was asked to replace some CCTV Hard Drives. I finished that and went back to my 165 to fix a faulty Air-conditioning unit.

By the time this was done, it was time for me to go back home, catching the 15:35 to London.

For those that are interseted, in the shed there was a few Class 165, a couple of Class 168's and a Wrexham and Shropshire

Thanks for posting this Simon and am sure it'll be of interest to most peeps on RMweb.

Kinda takes me back to my first day "on the railway" 32 years ago. I left school on 14th July, had a week off then started on the 24th.

I was fascinated and found it very difficult to concentrate on what I was being told. At Machynlleth nearly every train was a DMU but we had all the variety - Met Camms, Park Royals, Derbys and Swindon Cross countrys on the "mainline" trains. It was the daily "goods" with the class 25 that grabbed my attention though !!!

And I got paid for it too !!!

All I can say is enjoy yourself, ask as many questions as you can and give your mentors some respect. Your week will fly by but they'll make your visit more memorable.

Oh and watch out for the skyhooks and the left handed hammer

Enjoy it! I'd love to've done something like that for my work experience, let alone as a job!

Keep your eyes and ears wide open and you'll be sure to pick up plenty o modelling inspiration too!

All the best
