Lima Class 117

Hello everyone, and welcome to the first entry from my workbench.

A couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and bought myself a 2 car 117 in NSE livery (however I stupidly overlooked the TSL next to it!) with a view to adding extra detail, lighting and improving the performance of the 'pancake' motor. I started to add detailing parts to it yesterday, the pictures below illustrate how far I've got with it so far. So far, I have flush-glazed most of the windows, added a screw link coupling and high intensity headlamp to the front of the DMS (which is yest to be converted from a DMBS) as well as drilling the holes for the addition of pipework.

The only stumbling block that I have come across, apart from the bogies which I'll talk about in a bit, was the front lug, that secures the chassis to the body was part of the original, less than flush glazing. This was broken, through brute force! So, as one of the pictures shows, a plasticard lug had to be created, and actually works better than the original lug!

Anyway, back to the bogies, I'm hoping there'll be a few of you reading this and looking at the pictures, and I was wondering if there were any cast bogie sides that can be used to replace the undersized bogies and reduce the yawning chasm between the body and the bogies?

And finally, showing whats' been done so far!

Following advice from (among others) members 43179 and Jim SW of this forum, I fitted DC Kits bogies to my Hornby (ex Lima) 101. The principles (if not details also) will be the same. Hornby bogies from their 110 are slightly better still.

The following link leads to my 101 - it might be of interest.

Did you go for the standard DC Kits DMU bogies? As they still seem to be the cheaper and more practical option with regard to re-bogeying my 117.

By the way, those new bogies look fantastic on the 101. Also which wheels did you then use with the bogies?

Hi, yes, more or less. They are sold as spares for their DMU kits I guess, hence no clues as to how they're meant to go together. I set pinpoint bearings into the plastic axle-holes, and fabricated new crossmembers from thick plasticard. Wheels would be 12mm (IIRC) Keen-Maygibs bought from http://www.wizardmodels.co.uk/

Lima's wheels are too small, which complicates things ride-height wise. My blog shows how redundant bits of the DCK bogies can be used to set the ride height by happy coincidence.

However, more elegant engineering solutions are available!
