Return to HOe?

OK, so I've been working in N gauge, but it hurts so much!

When assembling the little sheds from the Peco platform kit starts to take a number of evenings, you have to begin to wonder if you're doing the right thing!

I have been building out my HOe stock collection, so now I have most of the ZB steam special (except for the generator van and the Kristall Wagen, too bling for words). That together with the fact that Lilliput are going to bring out the Zillertalbahn Gmeinder diesel with matching coaches.....

I have a trackplan, it's called Gerlos, I have some track, and I built a table last week. So far the table (7'4" x 3', i.e. 2.20m x 0.90m) is unmarked, just a sheet of MDF with some planed wood around the outside (you don't need much cross-bracing with 15mm MDF), so what's it going to be?

Austrian HOe or British N?

Plus points for HOe:

1. Bigger, less squint.

2. I have enough stock for 5 consists and 3 spare locomotives (for now ;-) )

3. Most of it is convertible to DCC or already chipped

4. Because it will be DCC, it simplifies wiring no-end

5. It's always going to be a branchline, and that looks fab always

Minus points for HOe:

1. I have to put together kits, yikes (but they are bigger)

2. Few matching kits (Try finding a single road engine shed for HOe)

3. Expense (Cheap Hornby turnout decoders don't seem to work with Roco DCC stuff?)

Plus points for British N Gauge:

1. Selection available (honestly this is quite amazing)

2. Resin Buildings

3. N gauge society

4. The amount of material on the Web

Minus points for N Gauge:

1. The detailing makes my eyes hurt

2. Even with a table of the size above, it's still only a branch line (I've seen Lemon St., it's fab)

3. Whilst the selection is fab, I've been having a horrible time with regions, era's etc... Sometimes too much information is just that!

4. I don't know anyone who could even begin to convert a Dapol LB&SC Terrier to DCC....

So slightly reluctantly I'm going back to HOe, but I will keep my N gauge stuff, and I might even just start to collect the Terriers to get a complete set....

When I took the plunge into 009, I sold off my meagre N gauge collection to fund rolling stock purchases, obviously I'm not sayin you should do it, but it is always a possibility. As for buildings, a lot of either OO or HO kits would be adaptable, or serve as a starting point for a kit-bash. As it's narrow gauge, unless you are modelling a specific locale, you can get away with a lot (as long as it's not going to stand out like a sore thumb without justification!)

Looking forward to seeing progress on here, and the 009 Society is also a good place to look, and aren't afraid of Hoe as it goes hand in hand with 009, and will always welcome new members!

Good luck

Hi J,

I've got a stack of both! I actually first started in narrow gauge with a pile of RhB stock (which I still have), I soon realised that with HOm I wasn't going to have a lot of room left, so I bought one of the ROCO starter sets, and then it went from there.... Now I have 2 plus just about anything else that I've been able to find...

I've now got a size-able pile of rolling stock of both ZB and OBB. And a couple of years ago I went to Mayrhofen for a one week break. Even though I couldn't drive the hobby lok, it was still an enjoyable holiday. I found on the German version of Wikipedia that it was proposed to link Zillertalbahn, from Zell am Ziller via Gerlos to Krimml which is on the Pinzgauer from Zell am See.

This would be an extremely difficult line to build, full of turns, switch backs etc.. A bit like the Albula on the RhB, But then both climbing up one side and then down the other side!

So now fast forward to the March 2007 Edition of Continental Modeller, where there was an article on the Bergeller Bahn. I've taken that and made it slightly simpler, a bit shorter (to fit the space), and even then I'll have to be careful not to have certain sets cross each other in the wrong place!

I just wish someone would stock ROCO HOe set-track....
