Framed!

2mm Andy

Since my last posting I've actually started construction rather than just doodling, so I thought it was worth producing a quick update. This is the current view of the baseboard (apologies for the distracting background!biggrin.gif )

The board is pretty conventional - a PSE softwood frame with a birch ply fiddle yard surface. The next job is to work out levels and cut and fit the risers that will support the trackbed. I've also started making the cassettes from aluminium angle (I remembered to buy 'raw' aluminium this time, rather than the anodised stuff, which doesn't conduct electricity terribly wellrolleyes.gif ).

I also spent two fantastic days at the 2mm Golden Jubilee Expo in Oxford. It was great to see so much top quality 2mm modelling in one place, and to meet friends old and new. I've attached a few photos from the weekend.

The fiddle yard on Fence Houses - one of the few layouts where a 50 wagon freight train looks small

Witney Euston - fantastic winter scenery

Highclere (left) and Wansbeck Road (right) - two superb examples of 2mm modelling

I also came away with a few goodies - I suspect this little lot will keep me quiet for a while!

thanks,

Hurrah!

I was was expecting a dip in layout blogs after Expo, prefect timing Mr H... I need some inspiration to get started again. Thanks for posting up some photos from the weekend, it really was worth the effort to get down to visit this year.

I think a lot us us came away with a few goodies. I wanted some 9mm wheels but they had all gone by Saturday afternoon.

I think you should lay and build your trackwork on top of a piece of glass...it seems such a shame to cover up that beautifully crafted woodwork for your baseboards!

I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to meet at the Expo Andy - The RMWebbers amongst us should have made ourselves a little badge with our avatar on

Looking forward to see this progress...

Hi Bryn,

Glad to be of servicewink.gif ! Having told a few people (including you and Missy) at the Expo that I was going to update this blog, I thought I ought to, even though my first reaction on getting back home yesterday afternoon was to want to collapse in a heap and go to sleepwacko.gif

Hi Donw,

I didn't get everything on my shopping list either - many of the goodies on the 2mm shop are produced in small batches, so at a big 'do' like Expo they tend to disappear fairly quickly. Hope you manage to get your wheels soon.

Hi Pete,

Sorry we didn't have a chance to meet - I can't believe how quickly the weekend went! I wondered why Mike wanted the display board in the exhibition hall, then later I saw your fantastic storyboard and models on it, so it all made sense!

One of the really positive things about the weekend was the chance to put faces to names.

The photo hides it pretty well, but my carpentry skills are very average. Probably the most useful tool in my toolbox is a mitre saw - it's repayed the cost many times over - and that's probably the main reason the woodwork looks OK. Also, using birch plywood for the trackbed makes a massive difference - it's such a nice material to work with compared to the stuff from certain DIY stores.

Hi Andy smile.gif

It was nice to meet up again. There should be more shows like that one for sure!

Do I spy a worsley 02 kit? If you need any help with gear ratios and stuff give me shout if you like.

Hi Missy

Definitely, although I'd give Mike a bit longer to recover before you suggest another Expo! wink.gif This week certainly seems a little 'flat' after such a good weekend.

It is a Worsley 02 shunter. I had intended getting the 2mm scale version, but Allen didn't have any, so I settled for the N version. On a loco that's only 22ft long in real life I don't think it will make much differencebiggrin.gif !

Thank you for the offer of help - it was partly through seeing yours and Nigel's models that inspired me to get one. The etch has joined the 'to-do' pile, so I'll be in touch soon.

Hi Andy

That looks like a really neat and well constructed baseboard frame, I don't think there will be any deformation in that!
