The construction of Calshot - Part Three - Basic relief

Construction is ongoing on Calshot MkII. Progress is a little slow due to lack of materials but I did manage to scrounge enough polystyrene to do the majority of the first layer of the basic relief. The polystyrene isn't quite thick enough to be up to the trackbed height so another layer will be needed.

In the photo below the Walrus seaplane is standing on the slipway (yet to be carved) and the inset image is one little cameo I hope to include which will be a sunken pillbox with exposed and eroded foundations with two residents - one lying on the grass and a fisherman nearby hoping to catch something from the Solent.

I like placing these little scenes for people to find and I expect you'll find more of these as the layout develops. Particularly considering I have an expanse of concrete I need to break up the monotony with these little cameos.

By the way, I'm tempted to add a little stream at the rear where the little girder bridge is similar to the stream that runs parallel with the spit before emptying out into the Solent. (Edit: I'm not sure it does go into the Solent but just ends in a pond!) The jury is still out on that one.

Anyway, here's the photo, apologies for the background but it's been too wet and windy to go outside!

Things are coming on quickly now aren't they! I look forward to seeing it with it's first layer of plaster cloth or similar on :) What track are you using for the 009? Peco? Crazytrack or the new 'mainline' version?

Thanks guys smile.gif

I will be using Peco Crazy track for this project mainly because from what I can understand the railway wasn't built to great standards. laugh.gif

I'm debating what to use for the scenic base - I'll be using DAS modelling clay for the infilled sections (i.e. most of the layout) but I'm not sure about the rest. I've never actually tried plaster cloth, would you reccomend it?

It can be a bit fragile if not supported, but I was wondering what you were going to use to cover the foam. I've used Polyfilla but on the foam stuff it's a pain in the rear! Cloth is messy but easier to get a coverage on the foam though I guess it may still require filler in places.

Thanks James.

Originally on the Mk I version I just used Polyfilla on top of the Celotex, not sure what I'd do this time. Probably just use the modelling clay and glue it on using PVA.

We'll just see how it goes I suppose laugh.gif

I have tried a number of finishes on celotex. Bandage followed by a coat of casting plaster has worked ok. Have also used bonding plaster (available from builders merchant) applied direct. That works too, but doesn't bridge gaps as well as the bandage. Cheap tho, and when wet floated very easy to smooth. Probably good for roads or runways as well.

Hmm. Interesting, thanks devondyno.

I guess I might try and experiment with different techniques if the modelling clay idea doesn't work.
