Lima 4f Conversions

Paul Boot

Started work on converting a pair of Lima 4f loco's - first chassis built. Second chassis 'acquired' already built - just needs refurbishing. Have one Lima tender in bits box - just need a second. Both bodies being modified as per John Middleton's article in Gauge O Guild gazette vol 13, no 12. The plan is to produce a 4f for under a ton(£100). Now trying to source low cost parts etc to complete the project.

Will update with pictures/information etc as project develops - see also Gauge O Guild Forum entry -

Fellow Guild member has just emailed me - various loco & tender bodies available for cost of postage. Could end up with a fleet of 4f''s - nice when a plan comes together! Just goes to show what being a member of the Gauge O Guild is all about.

First chassis now constructed from etched brass kit and tender modifications also started. Pictures have been added to my gallery. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/album/9526/1153-lima-4f-conversion/

Original chassis has now been stripped down and wheels test fitted to the new chassis, which appears to be square and sits nicely on the track. Just need to clean the original chassis ready for another set of wheels. Will take both chassis along to club on Tuesday evening for progress report. Viewing the Guild slide show of 'Lima Conversions' on DVD whilst awaiting the package of promised goodies from fellow Guild member.

Parts donated by fellow Guild member will enable me to complete my loco for £100 and leave sufficient body/tender parts for a further 3 x 4f's! Just need to purchase wheels & motors. Prelimary work on the tenders has now started - with one tender, which had arrived in 5 pieces, being repaired and re-assembled. Careful rubbing down with wet/dry has removed old paint and the repair is now totally invisible. A further tender, in whitemetal has also been strengthened with plasticard false bottom & intermediate supports and the next stage will be the fabrication of hand rails. Meanwhile the only two white metal sandboxes have been copied from thick soft plastic (similar to plasticard) and will have pipework added frfom brass wire for all of the loco chassis. The nest stage of the loco body conversion - boiler replacement, requires a visit to local B&Q to purchase the waste pipe tubing - £2 approx for 1.5 metres.

Pictures to follow shortly.

Regards,

Paul Boot.

One added bonus discovered yesterday - chassis from original 'Lima' body was wrong, discarded it and then realised after re-checking measurements, that it's actually from a 'Jinty'. So, there could be another project on the horizon!
