Step 1. - The Plan

Its taken about 2 years to finish the plan starting smaller and slowly getting bigger to fit everything I wanted in. Building a small layout didn't seem to make much sense as it wouldn't fulfill my needs, so a bigger longterm project seems like a better idea. This is my first real layout, but I want it to be prototypical as much as possible.

Its a 10' x 3' plan on 2 boards (6' x 3' and 4' x 3') which will be able to taken down when needed.

Baseboard frame and legs came from Model Railway Solutions..

I just need to decide on ply or MDF for the top. I think MDF as I'm used to this more.

I'll get some photos up soon of the full size plan with some stock on in place and the baseboards being built.

Ply is easier to get fixings in for point motors etc and absorbs less water, it is also lighter and does not contain formalydahyde.Track plan looks fab!

I've used MDF for years in car audio and know how to work with it, but I've read lots against it, so may go for ply. I found birch ply harder to cut than MDF with the jigsaw, but I'm hardly doing any cutting, so will probably just go for Ply.

Not worried about dirty stuff in MDF, most of the stories are chinese whispers and hold no truth. The dust also doesn't really affect me apart from the joy of lots of bogies at the end of the day. lol
