SRJ N1 Progress and a lid for the Gp

A Roof for the Gp

After much messing about with plasticard – heating, forming, bending; only to be disappointed with the rippled results and wasted plasticard a sheet of brass has been used to form the roof profile.

Seen here in placed (a bit too far forward!) on the Gp van body a number of layers of masking tape have been applied which will help create the textured surface of the roof. The tape will be left for a few days to ensure that it does not lift away from the brass sheet and final trimming will completed.

Prior to final fitting, slide glass will be used for the body side windows. I am debating at the moment to try and recreate one of the many broken panes found on the prototype…

Once that’s done (!) work will continue on the finer underframe details…

SRJ N1 - Weathering

Over the last week work has started to weather the SRJ N1 wagon. As previously mentioned these wagons towards the end of their lives were converted into Litt G Vans, and thus the intention is to model the wagon in a condition towards the end of its working career pre- conversion.

I’m not overly happy with the results, being that the body is constructed from Plasticard I struggled to get any grain texture or detail into the wooden planked sides, exaggerated by the larger scale . That said however there is still work to be undertaken, the underframe and brake gear are clearly unfinished and once complete final weathering and powders can be applied and "hopefully" improve its appearance.

Unfortunately whilst I was "wanting" to get it right, it just wasn't happening... and then the "downers" about the project started...ho hum.

Both wagons look rather tasty indeed. Prehaps the way to mimic wood in a larger scale is to use wood itself. I'm aware of 4mm scale modellers using close grained strip intended for aeromodelling for detailing, so to step up and build wagons using it with brass or plastic strapping might aachieve the effect you are after?
