Kadees and Magnets

My Neodymium magnets arrived today, so I have spent the evening on a crash course in setting and aligning Kadee couplers, having never used them before.

After a lot of trial and even more error I finally found the best position for the magnets in relation to the couplers. I had done some internet research which had got me to the point of buying the rod magnets (3mm x 6mm) I did get to the point of wondering if I should have just bought proper Kadee magnets but as my 25 magnets only cost £2.20 getting them to work was worth the learning curve.

And here are the working positioning, 3mm holes drilled and the magnets inserted, the big problem now is spotting them in operation.

as the coupler approaches the coupler moves to the side

I have had to straighten the headshunt as with the curve I just couldn't get the couplers to work

I have set up the magnet points

At first I thought i could just have magnets at the closest point in the picture but as the headshunt only fits loco and 1 car I had to fit magnets in the far positions to be able to slit strings of cars in the spurs to bring them back out.

Very neat! I think those are the same magnets I'm using for my Sprat + Winkles - I had no idea they could be sited like that for Kadees. If/when I get back to On30 I'll definitely try your way.

Hi John.

Thats very neat. :good_mini:Are the couplings effective when pulling a train over the magnets ? Do you have a link to where you got the magnets ?

Regards.

Tony.

The magnets are of Ebay HERE

When moving forward I have no problems with unwanted coupling now I have found the optimum position which for me is just next to the flat on the bottom of the rail and set 0.5mm below the rail head.

Fantastic!

I was just about to order some of the standard Kadee magnets from my supplier when I came across this posting.

I just found some similar on eBay from Hong Kong that deliver for free. Was about the same price for 100, and seem to be similar in size.

I'll give them a try (when the arrive) and will post my findings!

Ah..... but you will need a rectangular drill bit to fit those !!!

Maybe... use the right size of drill, and a little glue.. I don't see a problem. I use the Peco underlay, perhaps laying them on their side, after carving a spot out of the underside of the foam might be an option.

If they don't work, it was less than $5 to experiment with! :)

Have you had chance to play with them John? Is a pair of 3mm magnets OK for the Kadees bearing in mind their own products are 1.5" long? I am certainly tempted, not least because they look well hidden!

Hi John

have ordered 50 magnets after see a guy on youtube in usa installing them and looking at your installation the only difference is he had thre one side and three the other side just showing at rail bottom level one per sleeper gap with a little bit of ballast over the top and as he has a large area covered by the magnets allows a better length of operation then trying to line up on 1 magnet you just need to be in range of the three with a little signpost showing where they are what do you think as I won't get mine until tomorrow.

Regards

Michael
