Time for a recap...

Hello smile.gif

This seems like an ideal time to look back at the progress on Highclere. Im sure everyone is familiar with the layout by now so I wont bore anyone with the reasons why, what it is, etc, etc.. Anyway here is where I am...

The layout on the whole is comming together slowly. All the major bits and pieces are there and done and now its time to look at some of the fiddly detail bits (the bits I like) I still have the backscene to do which is scaring me right now plus another bit I really need to look at sometime soon is the rest of the boards for the fiddle yard and stuff.

I have figured out how to do the grass type stuff. Its a mixture of static fibres applied with one of the 'fly-swat grass' machines. After a bit of tweaking with a paint brush I am happy with the results (plus it feels great too!) There is plenty more to stick down though which I am looking forward tosmile.gif

The buildings are comming along well although as with everything else are taking a long time to do. I am happy with how they look so far and have figured out a way to do them with a handy laser cutter. I still have the goods shed, platform waiting shelter, cattle dock, and a little lineside hut to do.

The electrics still need a bit of work. Its not one of my strong points and as yet nothing has actually worked on the layout! This is something I NEED to get sorted soon. Who knows, the whole thing might not ever work! Trying to make everything light up and work doesnt help either, it just adds to the wiring.

Fiddly bits, these are the bits I enjoy doing. I really do like a challenge and luckily there are more to do. Now if I can just figure out how to do ground signals....wink.gif

Rolling stock is also comming along well. As this stuff cannot be bought from a shop I am not getting a huge collection of stuff. I have one or two more tank wagons to go to get a Fawley tank train (plus a 9F kit too!). I enjoy building this stuff, its what I did before Highclere came along.

So there you have it! I think I have come a fair way in the past couple of years but I am more than aware that its not going to finished anytime soon but one thing for sure is I am really really enjoying making Highclere so watch out for more posts soon smile.gif

its a great model missy, you obviously have really good finescale skills, still, its very reassuring to hear that your electrics are dodgy! ;P

are you wanting a photo backscene?

Superb modelling Missy. I've been following progress on old RMweb. Glad you've been able to move things into the new RMweb.....unlike me!

A bite-size Highclere post, I like it! It's nice to see it developing throughout the post. Nice touch. biggrin.gif

How big (long x high) does your backscene need to be? I have the ID Backscenes here but they might be more suitable for the larger scales. The biggest problem I have with all of them is the height. I believe a backscene directs the viewer down into the model and therefore should be at least 600mm high to achieve that.

Hello Ian smile.gif

I have just measured the wood for the backscenes and I need a backscene roughly 300mm high by 3200mm long to be split into 2 half way along the length.

Aha! Found you at last! :)

I'm glad to find your enthusiasm undiminished. The working tilly lamps are delightful and I'm fascinated by the signal mechanism. Unfortunately I'm poor at extrapolating function from appearance so I'm hopeful an article will appear in a future 2mm Magazine.

Hi Missy,

Good to see that you and Highclere are here at last, I am most impressed with the Pannier is it reworked the same way as John Greenwoods articles in MRJ ? (I think thats the right name) The tank wagon is also a work of art............well the whole layout is come to that.

Backscenes as you say can make or break a layout, get it right and it opens up a whole new dimension. I was advised to go for a low horizon and lots of sky. So as to give a feeling of depth and space. Whatever you should decide to do then I am sure it will be up to your high standards.

Shame I can't view the Q1 yet but it will be something to look forward to.;)

Cheers,

Geoff

Thanks guys smile.gif

Hello Geoff. I ended up scratch building a chassis for the pannier tank. It started off as a conversion similar to that article but I was told it had to have daylight under the boiler so the original chassis had to go!

Hi Dave.

Yes, apologies for that! Things are comming together slowly and I have been working on it although nothing of any substance to put a blog post together right now. I am learning the hard way that Highclere is not a quick little project, especially as time is a bit of a premium to me.

Its nice to know there is another exhibition invite waiting, can I ask for what show? I have been trying to hold off accepting any until I am happy with the layout, I think that is only fair as I dont really want to exhibit a half finished layout as you suggested.

Paitence is a virtue!

Missy

South Hants Model Railway in Portsmouth. It a one day show which we have just changed to the last week end in November, our last one was on 26th November. I agree unless you take it as a layout under construction then dont exhibit it until you are ready, you will enough problems any way. if you are interested then November 2012 and 2013 are up for grabs. PM me if you want.

Regards

Dave
