Delph - Stockport local arrives

Whilst I have the station boards down on the lounge floor, with Gravy Train's superb buildings temporarily in place, I thought I might just simulate the arrival of a through local from Stockport (via Oldham Clegg Street). This service is one of the deviations I'm making from the true operation of Delph, to give a bit more variety than just the motor trains would allow.

In this case, the train consists of Stanier 2-6-4 tank, 42551 - one of the darlings of Lees shed, with a two coach suburban train (models not yet finished - no glazing or buffers) consisting of an ex_LMS period I lavatory composite and an ex-LNWR brake 3rd. The train stops short of the run-round points, then the engine moves up to the buffers, ready to run round. Actually, this shows just how far along the platform passengers would have had to walk if this sort of train had actually run. Not much fun in bad weather!

Soon the fantasy will have to stop and I'll have to get back to working on the boards to get the track wired up and operational! Still, it's nice to play a bit.

Looks absolutely stunning Dave! Out of interest, how many vehicles can you fit in the run round loop? Also is there likely to be some interesting movements to enable the WC specials to take place, with potentially a temporary station pilot to relase the train loco and maximise the number of coaching stock possible for instance?

Happy modelling!

Delph, sorry Holt, is coming along well. I suspect passengers were kept on the platform until the loco had finished running round and had propelled the stock up to the buffers. The L&Y 0-6-0s had to do this when no motor-fitted locos were available. I wish someone had photographed one of the LYR 2-4-2Ts at Delph in 1953.

The LNWR D333 Brake Third coach might not be rare at Delph. I remember climbing up to an end window, assisted by my mates, and looking down on the bunker of a Fowler 2-6-2T on the way out of Delph. For some reason the loco was at the oldham end of the train. In fact I did wonder if the M52 driving trailer had similar windows in the guards end. Such snippets of memory from boyhood are often difficult to reconcile with certain things.

I doubt if a 'West Country' would be allowed over the line, if only for aesthetic reasons...!B)

Your Stanier 2-6-4T really looks he bees knees. The driving wheels stand out to me because they are the correct bevel-rim type. I really must get around to replacing Hornby's fowler wheels one day. Layout is looking grand.
