First Planning Meeting

It has been decided that we are going to base our model on a fictitious station in Dumbarton, called Dumbarton Castle. The layout will be set in Autumn 1965. The station would have been located on the site now occupied by the Strathclyde Homes Stadium.

 

Originally opened as the terminus of the line from Helensburgh & Balloch, the stations traffic was reduced when the lines were built to Glasgow. The old platform 2&3 were closed until a parcel concentration depot was built in the early 50’s. The lines from Glasgow to Dumbarton were electrified in 1960, but this did not extend down the short branch and a sparse local passenger service remains. This will be provided by either DMU’s or short loco hauled trains.

 

There will be space for 2 sidings in front of the fiddle yard on the left hand board. The debate is what to use these as, options being discussed are:

 

1. A two road engine shed, with minimal facilities

 

2. A loco servicing point and a carriage siding

 

3. A small goods yard

 

I will try and draw a rough track plan on the computer and up load it.
