Im back at work in the shed !

Having had a Christmas break from modelling, mainly due to the extreme cold in the shed, but partly due to a reduced mojo, I'm easing my self back into it.

The last couple of days I have been doing a bit of ballasting on the front dummy track in front of the silos and adding colour to the buildings made so far.

I am also starting some experiments with ambient sounds. The plan is to load several mp3 files onto my blackberry that can be played in the shed through a set of speakers.

In this video the sounds are of a real GP38 playing on a loop just through the speaker on the phone behind the camera.

I have also restored my laptop to its as new condition and as a consequence loaded some new video making software, this video was just a play with the "rain" effect :)

When constructing the shed, I installed speakers in the roof and also plan provide some sort of sound. I like the sky - very realistic - how did you do it, paint or is it printed?

Now that the cold weather has receeded, some modelling might even be attempted! A friend uses a wood burning stove in his shed - however, his shed is an old shipping container. I'm unsure about a stove in wooden shed though - but need to find a suitable heating solution. Any ideas guys - low cost & cheap to run....

John, most enjoyable vid. Thanks for sharing that.

Alco, you can get away with flashing ditch lights on UP and BN depending on where they got the loco from and whether or not they've bothered to rewire them.

Paul, I wouldn't use a wood burner or any flame based heat source. It may be more expensive to run but stick with electric for safety. I use a small greenhouse heater to keep the temp above 5c on cold days. Depending on the size and the insulation in your shed, a 2kw unit should suffice. £19.99 at the Orange coloured DIY shop. They work out to be around 15p an hour in 1kw mode or about 30p when you want it warmer. Mine runs about 50% of the time at night in a 12 by 24 shed so its costs me about £1.70/day on really cold days but averages out to around 60p over the past 2 months. I also have a heat exchanger/aircon unit which I got half price at the same place for £129. Its a lot more efficient and keeps the shed at a constant 19c when I'm working in there in winter, or 23c in aircon mode on the hottest summer days.

I know plenty of people who use woodburners in sheds or caravans, often made from old gas canisters (don't try cutting them up yourself!) the key is to totally heatshield all wood around them. I am not sure I'd put one in a shed smaller than 10'x12' tho, they are about 3-5KW minimum and need a large heatproof plate in the roof as well.
I'd take the above advice if your shed is small. If its bigger then clarke make a good propane "space heater" thing but they can blow the air around a bit which can be a pain if your floors dusty.
Jon, inspirational and original as always. That rain effect isn't bad, what programme is it?
